Hi braininfoseeker. I can "hear" the worry in your words. If they are only doing a biopsy, they will not remove any or her skull; they will just drill a little hole to remove a small sample of the tumor to check to see if it is cancer. I had a biopsy in 1992 and then surgery in 2005. Yes, I do not a noticeable dent on my head but still it is not like they took off a part of my skull. It is more like a long crease than missing bone.
Since I was balding anyhow, I just had them shave my whole head. However, if I had not asked, they would have just shaved about a 4in x 4in section for the biopsy.
Tell us more about what is happening to your mother. Why is she having the biopsy? Have they speculated on the type of cancer they suspect?
You and your mother are in my thoughts and prayers. _________________ Jim

Thanks a lot for your answer and prayer,
May Almighty bless on you,
Today her brain biopsy is done and doctor removed all hairs,
I am feeling strange to this hair removals,
Doctors performed CT Scan and MRI before biopsy and thet found tumor,
Now they will send the tissues to pathologist for test.
If its grade 3 or 4, is there chance to avoid surgery,I would always like to have chemotherapy.
Best Regards |

I do not think she should even think about avoiding surgery instead she should be asking whether or not surgery is possible. If it is possible, go for it. It is always better to cut out what you can and then do chemo and/or radiation therapy for anything that cannot be removed by surgery.
In 1992, my cancer was a quarter size grade 2 located on the motor strip so they were concerned that surgery might leave me unable to use the right side of my body. They recommended chemo with monthly MRI to make sure it did not grow. Chemo worked for me.
On the other hand, in 1998 when my mother was diagnosed with a GBMIV, it was already so large that it was causing a major midline shift and could not be removed. She was in her 80's and opted for no treatment.
In 2005 when my cancer recurred, it was a cigar sized 5cm x 2cm x 2 cm and was a grate III. Surgery was then an option. I was out of the hospital in less than a week. Although it has left my right side weak, I am glad surgery was an option. Surgery took out most of it. I then had 3 months of radiation to take care of any microscopic threads that still might be in my brain. So far, so good. As of last November, there was no sign of the cancer recurring.
I guess what I am trying to say is that if surgery is an option it should be strongly considered. _________________ Jim
