Hello everyone,

I'm a 24 yr old male who has been smoking both tobacco and marijuana very heavily since 1999. Ever since around 2000 I've had a pain near the back of my neck (the base of my neck where it meets my left shoulder) when i would bend my neck forward. It wasn't persistent but would come about when after several days of heavy smoking. Between then and now I would spit up some mucus and tar/resin whenever I got sick. Early last year I started having problems with my left shoulder where it would grind and pop when rotating my arm in a large circular motion it was never real painful but I still have the condition. I also have a similar condition in my right wrist where it pops upon rotations, and it also cause pain if i put too much pressure on it (like when i do pushups). Also for a short period I would feel a tingling under my right arm (tricep area) whenever i would exhale deeply. Just recently I started lifting weights a couple of days ago and have been experiencing more discomfort in my shoulder than usual. The popping and grinding seemed more significant and would be very stiff when waking up. I assume this is from soreness since its feeling a little better everyday. Now, I dont have any shortness of breath or persistant coughing but I am still very very worried about lung cancer. I have very recently quit smoking so I'm trying to see if these symptoms will improve upon extended cessation. Are there any OTHER condtions similar to mine that come up from smoking? Please help as I am quite worried.

Thanks,
Fio

Hello

I think your problems with your shoulder/arm are more related to your muscles and joints. The possibility of lung cancer is very very low for you. It's a good thing that you quit smoking, but I am afraid what you are describing is more related to musculoskeletal problems than anything else.
Still, the best course of action would be to see your physician.

best regards,
Leo

Hi,

Thank you so much for the reply. I must add that I am in not physically active and have not been for about 5 years. All the described symptoms came about with no real physical activity and only seemed to get worse when I smoked. More specifically it worsened the condition after smoking a lot but then went back to the normal discomfortable state. I've lifted weights recently and found that ONLY my affected shoulder got sore (similar to how it feels when smoking a lot but worse). I must also mention that I've intook an ungodly amount of unfiltered smoke in the past five years almost everyday. You did mention musculoskeletal problems and I did see some articles recently citing condition linked to smoking. Anyway thanks again and I'll post again in a few days to update my condition.

It's far, far safer to eat the dope then it is to smoke it and you'll still catch a buzz.

Don't smoke.
