Hello everyone,

I saw a chest surgeon this week who recommended a wedge biopsy, then testing while on the OR table, and then if cancerous, removal of the lobe.
I have been reading on the forums that some people have their tumors treated with chemoradiation before surgery.
Could you guys give me info as to the reasons why it would be treated before. Obviously if it is large, I understand they would try to shrink it.
But, I've also read of people who had nodules 2cm or so, and they had treatment before surgery.
My nodule is 2cm.
So I'm a little confused about the reasons.
Thank you,

Congratulations. Chemo and radiation are tools doctors use to shrink tumors before surgery. Surgery before chemo and radiation is normally only preformed when the tumor is small enough that the patient will benefit from the removal ASAP. In other words, you?re lucky, they seem to have detected your cancer in a very early stage and that means your chances for the surgery to be ?curative? are high.

Many times they will give chemo and/or radiation after surgery.

I?ll pray your surgery goes well.

Hello

Neo-adjuvant (before surgery) chemotherapy and/or radiation is used when the tumor is very large and/or is compressing vital structures such as major arteries/veins. So they aim to shrink the tumor to make the surgical procedure easier.

best regards,
Leo
