Hey Everyone,

I just have a question for any of you familiar with the stages of skin cancer. I went to my dermatologist about 6 months ago to get his opinion about a mole that suddenly began to grow. He said that it had 2 signs of skin cancer (in diameter and asymmetry) and that I should get it biopsied. I did not have enough money at the time to do it (or any insurance) and so I took my chances by not going in. It has not visibly changed since that time, though there have been a few times that white spots have appeared, resembling (and feeling like) a pimple. I have also had hairs grow out of it. Do you think that I should still be concerned about going in to get it biopsied?

Thanks!

Hello,

If your dermatologist was concerned enough to want to do a biopsy, and it has visibly changed from the time that he looked at it, then I'm pretty sure you should be concerned about having it biopsied. I'm not sure what the "white spots" mean -- though I have the same problem.

If he mentioned diameter, then it must be greater than (now I forget exactly what the minimum warning size is...) maybe 5 or 6 mm? Do you know what the diameter when you went to the doctor before, and what it is now?

Either way, I do think you should have a biopsy done ASAP (mainly because your prior dermatologist wanted to do so). After all, even if it turns out to be nothing... it's still cheaper than waiting and then finding out there's nothing that can be done.

Best of luck,

Ereshkigal
