Hello -

I am a 48 year old woman. I recently had a punch biopsy done on a non-pigmented, non-ulcerated raised lesion which was 3 mm round diameter in size. The lesion was on my anterior thigh.

Histopathology reports it as a malignant melanoma.

I have a copy of the pathology report. The greatest thickness is 1.05mm.

I met with the surgical oncologist who wants to do the "whole thing" due to the thickness being greater than 1mm.

So -- beside resected the lesion and getting clean margins (which I am not opposed to), the oncologist is recommending nuclear medicine to determine the sentinal lymph node and remove affected inguinal lymph node(s).

Any opinions? A second pathologist measured it at 1.07mm.

Thanks so much-
AMY

Amy, I am sorry about your melanoma. It is sort of unusual for one to be non-pigmented but it happens.

For whatever it is worth (I am not a doctor), it does sound like your medical team is recommending the proper course of action. Even if the sentinel node is clear, they might want to do a full body scan... probably a PET scan just to make sure. If the sentinel node has cancer cells, the you are facing further surgery and definitely further scans.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.
