Hi people I went to the doctor in November and had an ultrasound done the doctors saw a dark shadow in my gall bladder. Then later in January they did a CT scan and told me it was pallup some sort of build-up on the gall bladder. I later went for another CT scan in April and I was still the same size and they still told me it was pallup. So my doctor arranged for me to get my gallbladder removed and when I came to get my gallbladder removed couple days ago the doctor told me that I can't remove your gallbladder because it has cancer on it. I have no symptoms no yellowing of the skin or eyes. i am really scared I'm worried about my two girls 2 years old and 6 years old and wife. I have an appointment with the cancer doctor tomorrow and I'm hoping they can cure me with chemotherapy or other drugs. If anyone been in this situation can you please give me some advice what i can do two days now i been all upset and scared.
Thank you for any advice

Dear Sam
So sorry to hear about your cancer diagnosis. What a terrible shock to be told this news & so suddenly! You must be reeling at the moment. You are in my prayers & thoughts. I'm glad you found our forum & hope we can give you the support & information you need.
I am not familiar with your Cancer but I can't understand the Dr's reasoning in not removing the gallbladder due to cancer? Can you seek a 2nd opinion? Or at least ask more questions of your current Dr. I always believed with Cancer that the cancerous area should be removed by surgery & chemo/radiaton is then given if there are any residual cancer cells left? My apologies for being so unfamiliar with your illness.
After seeing the cancer specialist on Fri I hope we will hear a more positive update from you next. I can fully understand & empathise with the stress & upset you must now have. I will be praying hard for you & your young family.
Cheers, Angie. _________________ Brother diagnosed with GBMIV Feb 07

Sam, I am very sorry about your cancer. I am also sorry that someone did not recognize it as cancer sooner. Surgical removal of the whole tumor is always the best option unless for some reason it is inoperable. Have they told you why surgery has been ruled out? Even if they can't remove it laproscopically(sp?), they should be able to remove it the old fashioned way. At least it is worth asking about.
When I was first diagnosed, I had two girls in elementary school and a 3 year old son so I understand how it is to wonder "Am I going to be here when they graduate from High School?:
I did move your post but I left a "shadow" to it in the original forum.

Dear Brainman how long has it been since you first found out about your cancer?
Thank you both for giving me the support to fight this, I went to my doctor yesterday and they told me that we can't remove it by surgery because it might spread. I have to go see the doctor of Tuesday because the doctor only had the preliminary report and told me it was positive so Tuesday she is going to tell me what was in the pathology report, she did not have that at the time (I hope a miracle happens and nothing shows up it that or very little ) They told me that they are going to put me on two types of chemo and there might be a chance that it will slow down the cancer. I hope the chemo can kill it if possible.
Does anyone know anyone with gallbladder cancer and their situations? and also how effective is chemo?
I thank all for replying make me feel better to talk to other people.
Thank You
Sammy |

Brainman I am happy to hear you are doing good and I hope there are more years to add to that.
I just hope after I take chemo it will destroy the cancer, because the doctors just scare me saying that it might or might not work or it might come back. Then I keep telling my self the reason they are saying that is if that if they tell someone it will work and they will get better and nothing happens the patient might say the doctor told me that I was going to get better and nothing is happening. I don't know if that is true or not but I just keep thinking that just to somehow cheer myself up and hope the chemo works.
Thank you

Hi Sam...thinking about you...hope your chemo is going well. How is your body adapting to it? Are there many side effects?
God Bless! |

I want to add that my Mom (she'll be 82 later this month - May) has just gone through a similar situation. After being admitted to a local hospital for a week, they decided there was something amiss with the gall bladder and wanted to remove it (dark shadow/build-up, etc.). By that time we had gotten fed up with all the screwing around and decided to get a second opinion. I want to add this is now through a major, internationally renown hospital!
We were told by the doctor that he could not see any reason to remove the gall bladder and just to keep and eye on it (in so many words).
Mom has had regular check-ups over the past 2 years and even had a CT scan as recent as this past October.
Today, she was diagnosed with inoperable gall bladder cancer. They're doing a biopsy Monday (whatever it's called when they go down the throat) but he's sure it's inoperable cancer because it's all around the GB and that a lymph node around the pancreas is swollen.
Mom is handling it well and says she will fight it with everything. I'm in shock as to how this 'has gone on for 2 years' (this doctor's words) and now they say it's inoperable).
And I asked flat out if the GB had been removed 2 years ago, would this have happened. And he said 'No'!
I'll post any follow up in terms of treatment and with who. But there is a doctor now I want to suffer! |

Hi bandeti. I am very sorry about your mother's gall bladder cancer. Note that the last time anyone posted to this thread was in Sept of 08. I would usually suggest just starting a new topic of your own but since we have so few members with any experience or knowledge about GB cancers, I hope one of the others will reply.
You and your mother are in my thoughts and prayers. _________________ Jim

Bandeti...I know exactly how you feel...except my mom had been
told for the 3 years prior to her diagnosis that her back aches were
caused by arthrites. They even took xrays a couple of years ago...but "nothing was seen". To shorten the story a bit....Then finally after 5 weeks of waiting for the biopsy result to be returned (was lost in the hospital for four weeks somewhere???) we got the dreaded news. It's something I will never forgive the hospital and doctors for. The way that seniors are treated here in some hospitals in Southern Ontario is disgraceful. I had three doctors actually look me in the face and say...well....she's 88...you're lucky you've had her this long. Yes I know I am very aware of this...but she was my mom...how dare they. I actually told the last one who told me this as he was walking out of the room...is this what you'll tell your mom one day? Then you get the line over and over again...."if we only caught it sooner!" Enough to make someone...plow someone else in the snout! I made up my mind then
that I was taking a leave from work to look after her at home. Again,
a very difficult thing to do, since I'm an only child and everything was placed on my shoulders. But I'm so glad I could do this for my mom..till
her dying moment. I have so little faith in our health care system
here....I know that she wouldn' t have survived 1/4 of the time in that
hospital than she did at home and with dignity. My heart goes out
to you and all those going through this! |
