My mother was diagnosed with uterine cancer about a year ago. Upon diagnosis she had a hysterectomy. She decided no followup therapy. Just recently she had a pap smear and check, and we found out that the tumor is back. Do you think it is in the tissue since her uterus is gone?
She is 89 years old.

Barbara

This probably means a local recurrence affecting nearby organ(s).

regards,
Leo

If you have uterine cancer....and even if it is in an early stage, when the hysterectomy is done.....DEMAND that the pelvic lymph nodes be removed, or at least biopsied.....during the operation.

My gyno did not and now I have stage 3 uterine cancer that had stayed in my body because the lymph nodes were not removed. I even had 35 radiation treatment following surgery.....but a year and a half later, cancer had spread to lymph nodes in the peri-aorta area. I have just finished 5 months of chemo---receiving treatments every three weeks.
NOT PLEASANT.

My new oncologist says that 30% of women with uterine cancer who do not have the lymph nodes removed and biopsied will develop a later stage cancer.
