Simon, I am so sorry that the results came back as an anaplastic glioma The difference between an oligodendroglioma and an oligoastrocytoma is not that great in terms of treatment options. Surgery is an option if the tumor is accessible and if they can safely remove a large part of it. Chemotherapy can be Temador or Temador + Avastin (or maybe the oder gold standard PCV). There are some research protocols but I don't think you would qualify for them at this point. Stereotactic radiation therapy is another possibility. Or you may receive all three.
On a more personal note, I to had anaplastic oligodendroglioma in 2005 and I am still here . My therapy consisted of one cycle of PCV pre surgery, surgery, and stereotactic radiation for 3 months after surgery to make sure that any remaining cancer cells where killed. I do have some weakness on the right side with loss of balance. I also have occasional speech problem and have to the anti-seizure meds for the rest of my life.
Simon, you are in my thoughts and prayers. _________________ Jim

we were told by our neuro oncologist that with an anaplastic Oligodendroglioma, chemotherapy or radiation are used as first line treatment and not both. use radiation or chemotherapy initially than down the track if their is a reccurence we can use whichever treatment we didnt use first. does that make sense? everything i have been reading says that using radiation and chemo together has the best outcomes. _________________ diagnosed low grade 2 brain tumor 2006. latest mri confirms higher grade 3-4. surgery only resected small percentage and no radiation or chemo as of yet |

Simon, that does make sense to me. It sounds like it is not operable. Mine was so they gave me chemo before surgery to try and shrink to tumor. But it does make sense to go with radiation and hold back on the chemo. Hopefully, the radiation will kill all of the cancer and you will have a loooong time before you need the chemo _________________ Jim
