My father has just been operated on and they found pancreatic cancer. I would like to know if I could donated my pancreas. I know you can not live without a pancreas but this is just a hypothetical question. Can this prolong his life? R.C. Dear FARADISM

Sorry to hear about your father?s diagnosis. Pancreatic cancer is difficult to treatment, and is usually treated by surgery and adjuvant chemoradiation (if respectable).

The challenge is not the transplant; it is how to clear all cancer cells by surgery and adjuvant treatment. Most patients will experience recurrence, not ?pancreatic failure.?

Good luck,

Dr. Jay Lu

I posted a story about my mom that has some interesting information that may help. She is now 83 and has been undergoing treatments and living with panceatic cancer for 19 months now. I just wrote her story under Angel's Wings, it turned out to be long but it's her story from the beginning and all the treatments she's gotten. You can never be edcuated enough especially when someone you love has a terrible disease! I don't think they would do a pancreatic transplant although your intentions are good. There is a whipple procedure that is sometimes done but is complicated and can be fatal. A friend of mine's father had one done and died a short time later of complications. There are other alternatives out there such as radation and chemptheraphy that can help. This is not a disease that ever goes away, it is only controled to prolong life. Most people only live 3 to 6 months and don't even know they have it until it's too late. We were lucky my mother got symptoms early on, it's too bad that 2 doctors did not properly diagnose it. Thank God we still were able to get her help that has helped this long. She's going through a tough time right now but is starting on Tarceva tomorrow then there is Camposar left. Hopefully they will come out with more drugs soon to keep people living longer. Get a good oncologist who you trust and knows what they are doing and you should get good results. I thank God my mother has....she's a walking miracle! Good luck with your dad!
