Hi All,
My mom has just found out that she has a tumor in her left lung. She is 71 years old and has smoked for about 55 years, so it isn't really much of a surprise. I am trying to get myself educated about this disease so that I can help her make decisions regarding her treatment options.
She went for a check-up and a routine chest X-Ray showed that she had a large mass in her left lung. She meets with a surgeon tomorrow who will run a series of tests to determine the type and stage of cancer that she has. I think that he is planning bronchioscopes, CT scans and what not. We'll know more tomorrow.
One thing that has us wondering about is results of one of her blood tests. They did a screening for CA 125 which came back abnormally high. I think normal range is around 30 and doctors get concerned when they get readings about twice that number. My mom's number was a whopping 726. Usually this marker indicates ovarian cancer except she had a complete hysterectomy (including ovaries) about 25 years ago. I guess that I would like to know if anyone else out there had elevated levels of ca 125 in their blood test and if it could be strictly caused by the lung cancer. Thanks and wish us luck tomorrow!

Hi All,
We saw the surgeon on thursday and he said that she definitely has lung cancer. I asked him which type and he said non-small cell. It is a relatively large tumor and measures about two inches from top to bottom. The surgeon has not said what stage the cancer is at. We are going next week for chest and pelvic CT's as well as a fine needle aspiration biopsy. Has anyone else had that done? What to expect? We did all the blood work last week along with an EKG. We still are waiting for a pulmonary function test. I think the surgeon wants to have all the test results in by the end July with an eye towards surgery in August. This is all very overwhelming and I think that mom is getting discouraged. She is, however, making a very valiant attempt to quit smoking! Is there anything that I can do to make this easier on her?
