hi everyone, i'm very lost with the small amount of info i recieved from the neuro's so far....well, my 84 yr old dad has advanced parkinson, post stroke (paralyzed on left side) and now they told me only this.....went to the ER 3 days ago with a generalized seizure.....staring at me or into outspace, then passed out for 5 full minutes....an mri showed a HUGE glio mass on right side of his brain....doc told me prognosis is not good, well of course i knew that.....yet he is showing NO signs of deterioration and wants to get out of the hospital and back to the snf (uggghhh) where he resides, due to the stroke.
IS HE A TICKING TIME BOMB??????
i opted for no biopsy, no surgery, because of his age and infirmness...he'd never survive that due to his intense weakness...i am in the dark about this whole thing, i love him dearly and am so very scared.
what am i to expect???

It is difficult to tell someone what exactly is going to happen, because every case is different. Prognosis depends upon age, speed of growth of tumor, and location of tumor etc. However, as you know, a GBM in a frail 84 year old is very bad news, especially if the person is too frail to treat. First off I would like to offer my prayers and thoughts with you and your dad. If your father wants to go back to the snf and that makes him happy; let him go back there. Just keep a good eye on him now since the new diagnosis. Whatever makes him happy is the point here. Making a person happy can be the best treatment there is. In our bodies we have natural endorphines that makes us feel good. When released by laughing or feeling good they can be a healer and comforter for the body. Since you have opted no surgery or biopsy keep your father happy and comfortable and remain prayful. God Bless You  |

tawny111, I am very sorry about your father's advanced brain cancer. My mother died due to a GBMIV. She should no signs of having anything wrong until about 3 months before her death. She died just 2 months after her official diagnosis. My mother also opted for no treatments. We were fortunate in that Mom had a sharp mind until close to the end when she just gradually went into a coma and stopped breathing.
You and your father are in my thoughts and prayers.

i can't thank you enough for all of your great thoughts and prayers, advice. actually, they are going to operate on this mass 2inches by 2, they are not quite sure what it is until they take a 3D mri, yet where it is located is in a very accessable area, thank goodness, and i was told he'd be in the neuro section for 4 days then start pt......they will biopsy the tumor when they operate and it hopefully is not malignent, he'd never be in good enough shape to go thru with that stuff.
can't tell you how much your words mean to me, the operation is tomorrow and i'm very depressed, i can't drive to this hospital, but can talk to him one the phone when he's up and aware.
i wonder, as always, even if the surgery is a success, is this another downhill battle for my dad? omg, i hope not, i cannot take anymore, i feel like i'm falling or already have, into a deep depression, that doesn't help anybody, yet, i can't help it.

i'm replying to myself...lol.....well, as of the day before the surgery, i do not no as of yet if my dad has a gbm, i assumed because they called it a huge mass, very confusing info as so far, also i realize that tumors are sized by cm's, yet in layman's turms.....the surgeon said his was 1 1/2 inches by 2 inches.....which would lead me to believe his tumor is around 5 cm????? is that "huge"......never graded it....he just kept saying that once they do the 3D MRI, then they will know everything they need to know before surgery.
uggghhhh......just the word tumor is plain out scary
