I have a friend I've known for 15 years ~ he's a rancher.

He told me yesterday that his PSA was 14.40 some 10 years ago. His doctor (from the V.A.) prescribed sulfur.

His PSA is now 3.20

Has anyone else heard of this?? I've googled around and I can't find anything. I thought I'd find reference to it somewhere--at least on a alt med site.

I'll see him again in 2 weeks, I plan to ask for more details (like what form of sulfur, a medicine or supplement).

My guess is that the rancher was suffering acute bacterial prostatitis, not prostate cancer, and the VA doctor treated him with sulfa drugs. That's just a guess. I was surprised to read that sulfa drugs (sulfonamide) are still in use, since they were the original anti-microbial drugs. But apparently they are still widely used, particularly with urinary tract infections (and hence they were probably a drug of choice with the VA urologist at the time.)

They did do a biopsy, found nothing, but only one biopsy, which we all know doesn't mean for sure there's no cancer. But, sure, maybe that was it, BPH. Thanks.

He also said that sulfur is the only drug that will absorb into the prostate.

Bactrim is still for sale, it's sulfur.

I wonder how they diagnois BPH..?

BPH is not prostatitis. BPH is just benign growth. Prostatitis is inflammation, often but not always caused by bacterial infection. That's why I'm thinking the "sulfur" was a sulfur-derived drug used to treat the infection.
