My onc. seems perfectly fine with me having an annual diagnostic mammogram. She never mentions having an ultrasound on my "good" breast. I would feel better having one every 6 months...but does that mean I would be getting too much radiation?

I was DX 4 years ago on Oct 30. I could not feel my lump..1.6 cm. I had lump., 4x A/C, mast. and immediate tram flap reconstruction.

I want to stay ahead of this game if possible. I can't take meds. because of side effects. I have tried tamoxifen, arimidex, and femara.....NO MORE.

She has told me I do not need mammogram on the reconstructed breast.
But I have heard from other women who do have it. I am so confused.

Thank you so much Dr. Leo for this sight. We women and men need all the info we can get.

Hello

If you had a mastectomy you do not need mammograms of that area anymore. However you need mammograms of the other breast, once a year is the recommendation. I am not sure if your insurance would pay if you wanted to have it more frequently. I understand your desire to have frequent and have early detection of any abnormality, but the medical literature states that 1 year intervals are enough. Radiation associated with a mammogram is not high, you should not have any problems even if you get it every 6 months.

regards
Leo

I had lumpectomy in 1996 and have had annual mammograms every since. I guess I would opt for an annual mammo on the un-reconstructed breast. Lauri
