So sorry to hear about your mom. I know how you feel. My mom 86 was diagnosed today with non small cell lung cancer that has metastisized in the lymph nodes in her neck. We don't have a stage yet. She is very small and frail and eatting very little. She is in good spirits at this point but so very weak. I wish someone could give me a time frame. My heart goes out to you and I am also the sole caregive for my mom. I have taken family med leave from work to care for her and stay with her night and day in the hospital , with a few breaks to go home when friends come up. My best thoughts are with you and your mother. I am hoping that she is without pain and peaceful .

My dad was diag w/nsclc stage 4 & mets to spine & hips on 11/08 at age 43. Large mass on R lung & collapsed L lung. No surgery so chemo & rad 5d/wk. No results. 4/09 rushed to the hospital b/c breathing issues. Hooked up to o2 & treated for infection. Released when o2 levels were good w/help from Hospice at home. In Hospice as of 6/2/09. Passed 6/10/09. Missing you forever daddy.

Things have been going not too bad. She has the oxygen and new meds now and is holding her own. She has managed to get all the legal and financial affairs in order with me, so that's one less stress to deal with. She's trying to be brave and keep fighting, but more and more, she is giving up. I don't blame her, it's hard to want to live when you can't do even a fraction of the things you did before you got sick. She has more bad days than good, and is getting that "grey, tired" look. She has lost so much weight, it makes me nervous. Overall, we have had some good talks, but I have noticed she is forgetting things more often and gets confused really easy. Is this normal?? The nurse said her oxygen needs to be increased also. We go to the doctor's again next week, and he will evaluate her again to determine her activity level.

Just trying to enjoy what time we have left,

God bless you. It is so difficult to watch this process unfold. I understand that gray look you mentioned. The inability to function, due to SOB was one of the hardest things for my husband too. I just hated, hated, hated to see this happen to him. Evil or Very Mad

I don't know that she's necessarily giving up, but I do think that they detach as time goes on. This seems to be a natural part of the journey and I've read that they need to do this to begin to let go. I watched my husband and my mother do it, but it's not a conscious type of thing they do. I hope you understand what I'm saying.

I'm so sorry that things are slowing down, but glad you are recognizing that you need to treasure the time.

73 yo mother - 29 year breast cancer survivor, radical mastectomy with no radiation and no chemo and no recurrence.

Presented to the ER on April 14, 2009 with pleural effusion and pericardial effusion. Diagnosed on April 17th with stage IV adenocarcinoma NSCLC with mets to the lumbar spine. Began chemotherapy on May 1st- Carboplatin and Alimta plus Zometa for bone mets.
