There is no link between smoking and stress.

It's a common EXCUSE. Smoking relieves my stress kind of thing...it's what they'd tell their friends...it makes it sound like they NEED it.

Yes, they'll be stressed if they don't have a cigarette but only because they're addicted.
Quite apart from the addiction and possible health effects, smoking reduces stress and many people working in stressful jobs smoke for that reason. Just look at all the driving instructors who smoke [or used to smoke before smoking bans were introduced]. Shocked

Hi

You are obviously not a smoker and have never been one. Nicotine is the most addictive of all drugs. 3 cigarettes on average and you are hooked, end of story.

Just one cigarette can have you hooked for life, it really is that addictive.
No it's not. No offense. Sure nicotine is addictive, but this is not crack or heroin we're talking about. With extremely rare exception at most, you cannot be hooked after just a cig or 3, to say the least. (PS: I have smoked a great many more than 3 cigs in my lifetime. I do not ever "crave" them in any kind of addictive way.)

Back to the hospital workers....

What amazes me along with them smoking is that hospitals - including some of the foremost cancer centers - allow smoking RIGHT outside the entrance doors. ??? Given the second-hand smoke thing, this is grossly irresponsible IMO.

Hi bill5

Have you ever been to a group therapy session for ex heroin addicts.......Guess what.....they ALL smoke ciggies....ask any of them whats harder to quit Heroin or Cigarettes.....I think you know what the answer is.

Plenty of evidence to say ciggies are more addictive than heroin. 3 in a row is enough to do it. Hats off to you for resisting the urge.

Cheers

I think that heroin being a LOT more expensive, harder to take, lacking the same social acceptance cigarettes enjoy, and oh btw being illegal has something to do w/that.

We'll have to agree to disagree...

Gotta go with Chemoman on this one. Nicotine IS harder to kick than heroin. Heroin is also probably cheaper these days! If the above statement is true and heroin can "hook" you with ONE usage, then nicotine may be able to have the same effect. I generally think of nicotine as a more progressive addiction though. Snorting heroin is quite easy too. The illegality of it is definitely an issue along with all the horrible things it does to that person's life and everyone around them.

As far as rehab centers and smoking? Yup -- they do in outside areas. Most addicts and alcoholics smoke. Caffeine is out of bounds though --- go figure. The rehab center that I'm referencing is on the grounds of a non-smoking hospital campus ---- except for the rehab area. I guess they figure detox and rehab are bad enough without quitting nicotine.

Oddly enough, I know an ex-heroin addict who smokes, but it's not a hard habit. One a day if they are around, so not every substance is addictive to even an ex-addict. (Just to muddy the waters more.)

Newer breed of docs don't smoke the way old ones did and most hospitals are totally non-smoking campuses now. A real problem when you have a loved on in the hospital. Shocked

Hi bill5

Actually we can agree to agree......you just gave all the reasons smoking is harder to give up than shooting smack.

But you didn't say "harder to give up," you said "more addicting." Not the same thing. Cool

And others don't give up smoking because - despite the health warnings/dangers - there isn't the incentive, for reasons I've already listed. It's not all about "addicting."

Bill -- You're going to just have to take a leap of faith on trust with this issue. Nicotine IS more addictive than heroin. That's not from me, that's from people who know more about this stuff than I do. Unfortunately, I had to learn about this ocky stuff because of a relative who had an addiction.

Sorry, but religion is the only area I take leaps of faith. Cool

Again, agreeing to disagree...
