My mother was diagnosed Thursday August 13th with multiple tumors in the middle and lower lobes of both sides of the lungs. It has also spread to the liver and her liver has doubled in size due to tremendous tumors. I saw the ct scan and it looked like about 5-10% of the liver is not involved right now.

She is an artist and is very active in teaching art and painting all the time. I am staying with her full time now as long as she needs me. I was moving away to start a branch of my business the week she was diagnosed but all of that is called off now. I am glad to be here because just a few hours alone can drown her in despair. Her pain is terrible and I do not know how to help her. We go to our first visit with the oncologist tomorrow to find out just what the options are.

My siblings and I have listened to her"wishes" and will try to get the living will and power of attorney taken care of soon. I managed to get her estranged son to bring over 2 of his 4 kids to see her, and all of her brothers and sisters came from out of town over last weekend. We are focusing on quality in case we don't get quantity.

Sad thing is we went through all of this with my Dad 15 years ago. He survived on treatment for a year but it was very very tough on him. This time we at least have some idea of what to expect from treatment. I guess I don't have any specific questions at this time just looking for some support.

Thanks,
Robin

Robin, welcome, and I am so sorry you arrive here by such unfortunate news. There are really no words to adequately describe this disease and what it does to families and those which love it's victim. It's "simply" devastating. I am glad you found your way here: these forums offer a lot of support and great information. I just want you to know you and your mom are in my thoughts and prayers today.

Rhonda

So the oncologist disagreed with the pathologist so we are sending the samples away for a 2nd opinion. The pathologist said it started in the thyroid but she has no symptoms of that at all. We go for an ultrasound on Friday and back to doctor in a week for test results and treatment plans.

They prescribed her these 72 hour pain patches which don't seem to have any affect. She's had that problem with some pain meds before. I hope they can find an option that works because she is staying at a constant 7 on the pain scale and its very hard for her.

Thanks for the support.
Anybody else have no success with the pain releaving patches?

Robin
