Hi All,
My mom has become hoarse. I also noticed that the sound of her cough has changed. It started this past Tuesday. Anyone know what could ring this about suddenly? She just had a scan on Tues. so I know the onc would have told us if something was going on as he read us the scan results. I will be asking about it at mom's appt. with the NP. But for now, does anyone have any idea?

Hi Kristi,
The hoarseness could be cause by radiation if your mom has had any.
It is very common. I would mention it to the doctor just to confirm.
I wish your mom luck on her scan.
Be strong!

Hi Anthony,
Mom had radiation last fall.
This is starting to concern me. I am sooo glad that we see the NP on Tuesday afternoon.

Hello again,
Yeah, if it was last fall, then it is probably something else. Radiation effects are usually gone after 3 or so months.
Talk to the doc, they will hopefully know.
Good luck on Tuesday! |

| Kristi, when my mom's voice became very hoarse, they told me it was because of her lung cancer pressing on either the voice box itself or a nerve to the voice box, I can't remember which. She also had been having some difficulty swallowing. |

Tera,
That is what we were told today that it could be tumor activity pressing on the nerve. I hope that Mom's cancer has not spread to her mymph nodes in her neck or on that nerve.
I must admit that I am really starting to feel uneasy about Mom's survival. I guess it kind of slaps you in the face when the NP says that Tarceva won't cure but hopefully stabilizes the growth or shrinks it some. I have been pretty realistic thru this whole journey... I am just not feeling too optimistic right now.

| Kristi we were just told the same as Tera... well kinda.. they said it takes two nerves to operate the voice box, one sends info to and one sends info from, and that one, probably around the collar bone area is probably inflamed. Thas my understanding anyway. They said they have seen ppl get their voice back to normal once the tumor shrinks. Best wishes to you and your mom.. |
