Hi all - I'm a bit new, but very nervous!
Last year I went for surgery for my endometriosis, and after that did a pap smear that came up normal.
Recently I went for my yearly, and suddenly had an abnormal pap. I went for a colp and biopsy and it came up abnormal again. Then again they did a pap and came up abnormal, so my doctor explained to me that he'll be doing a cone biopsy. I'm ver. nervous, I'm only 23! What's with all these problems when last year I was perfectly fine?
I'm scared I won't be able to have kids with a combo of the cone biopsy side effects and my endometriosis. Is there anyone who has heard of the successful pregnancy rate in women with both? I'm in a wonderful relationship with a man who eventually does want children, and I'd like to know if that can be with me.
Thank you in advance. |

Dear Themande,
First, sorry that you have to be here in this forum, but you will find the support of everyone here. Its okay to be scared and we will help you along the way.
The word "abnormal" often scares us. It is not unusual for someone of your age to get an abnormal pap. and Abnormal doesn't always mean cancer.
I would say your doctor definitely has your best interests at heart, but I don't know if you left out any information or if he is just being too precautions. They typically won't go for a cone biopsy until it is something more serious. Did he tell you what kind of abnormal cells he found? Does he know a stage? I know for me, I did not have to have a cone biopsy until my cells on a pap showed that I have cancer. And I had several years of abnormal paps. If it is a low grade cell, I don't think you need to have a cone biopsy despite several abnormal test results.
As for your fertility question. The cone biopsy doesn't potentially affect your chances of having a child. As you probably know, the endometriosis would have the greater effect. And in combination, I do not believe those chances change.
Hope everything works out and this helps! Keep us updated! _________________ Stage 1B1 Adenosquamous Carcinoma of the Cervix.

Thanks Rockstar :]
I wonder if he's just being precautious, because he hasn't mentioned what kind of cells I have nor did I have the mindset to ask when I was in the office. After I wrote down what he wanted to do I poured over every bit of information I could find on the procedure and it just made me a bit more nervous! Do you think it's better to be safe than sorry? I should probably have asked these questions much earlier, huh? |

I am SO confused now.
I went for the procedure, with my doctor telling me it was a LEEP. When the other day came in he said they were doing a cone biopsy. After the procedure I asked the nurse which one they did, and she said both.
I spoke to the discharge nurse and left my cell phone number for the doctor to call me about the surgery. I wanted to know why they did both, I thought they only needed to do one? The doctor never called me, so now I have to wait until Monday to call the office and find out exactly what happened.
I'm confused as to why they'd do both..it makes me really worry :[ |

Hmmm, that does sound strange, I'm no doctor (yet) but it doesn't make sense to me that they would preform both a LEEP and a cone biopsy at the same time. The LEEP would be unnecessary. As the cone biopsy would be a much larger sample of your cervix than the LEEP. It would be like taking both a large portion of food and a small portion of food of a plate for tasting. Why take a small sample also if you are getting a large sample? (I hope that simile makes sense)
Did you have this preformed at a hospital or at his office? Where you put under anesthesia? If there wasn't any anesthesia involved, I would have to say they did not preform a cone biopsy. As far as I know, the cone biopsy is only performed under anesthesia.
I hope you get to the bottom of this and your Dr. doesn't beat around the bush! _________________ Stage 1B1 Adenosquamous Carcinoma of the Cervix.

| Okay! After speaking and once again annoying my poor gyno, he told me that the LEEP is the method he used for the cone biopsy. That's why they said I got both :] |

Hi rockstar,
My biopsy came back with mild dysplasia, but they got the irregular cells out. I have to go back every 3 months for a year for pap smears to see in the abnormal cells grow back, so I hoping for the best that they all come back fine! |

I'm glad its not worse!
And it sounds like your doctor is being pre-cautious and really making sure you are taken care of!
Don't forget to go back in 3 months and crossing my fingers that nothing comes back! _________________ Stage 1B1 Adenosquamous Carcinoma of the Cervix.

| I'm sorry I haven't posted. I just got the results from my follow-up pap and they're abnormal again....I have to go for another pap at the start of december and I'm really scared. I had clear margins, why are the cells growing back? |

Hi Themande,
Thanks for posting an update. I was beginning to wonder.
To answer your question, the clear margins esstially means that there wasn't a presence of abnormal cells deep within the cervix. This is good as the cells are on the surface of your cervix.
Sometimes it is impossible to get every single abnormal cell allowing for them to keep returning. After all, cells are microscopic.
Just stick with your paps, even though they are a pain in the butt. Keep monitoring it and don't let it progress into something much worse.
Glad to hear you are doing well! _________________ Stage 1B1 Adenosquamous Carcinoma of the Cervix.
