My Dad is dying from colon cancer..to the point they have stopped all treatments i.e. chemo, radiation and refuse to do surgery because the cancer has broken thru the wall and rampaging his body. He also has severe staph infection from 1st surgery in Jan 2005, pneumonia, diabetes, and heart only working at 30%.. YET they have him scheduled for colostomy to "make him more comfortable".
I can never get in touch with surgeon...only thru my Mom who understandably is confused!
Doctors have told us he only has a "few days"...so WHY this surgery??
ANY info appreciated!!

guess I'm just anxious for any response..still don't understand why the doctor performed the colostomy and put my dad's heart under further stress...seems like they only prolonged his (and ours) agony.
We just want to bring him home...any others had experience with Hospice care? (I'm sure) What should be our main requests ?

My Dad has bowel cancer also. The doctor said he also has lots of deposits in his liver. They said they wont be operating, if tumor in bowel starts to obstruct they said they will give hom radio. Im not sure why your Dad is having this operation, maybe they are trying to make him as comfortable as possible, like you I dont know why. I just wanted to send reply to you to let you know that someone had read your post.

My Dad hasnt started any treatment yet, diagnosed 5 weeks ago and tests started, they had a meeting this week so hopefully we will here something this week about treatment.

My Dad has been given 15 months, but the doctor said with it spreading to liver he could get worse very quickly at any time.

thank you immensely for replying. Nobody really knows how hard it is to watch your parent suffer until it happens to them. We are trying to get my Dad well enough to come home with hospice care by this weekend.
I wish you strength and peace while you go through this with your Dad. My younger brother just started chemo and radiation for cancer of esophagus and liver and is responding really well...hopefully the radiation will work out for your Dad's liver too.
