Hi All,

My Dad got diagonsed(Oct 26, 2006) with PANCREATIC CANCER
( Tumor in Pancreas Head infiltrated to Veins & Lymph nodes, Surgery wasn't succesful with the spread. Doc's said his SPAN would be around 6 months.

Was on Chemothearpy(Gemcite), Tarceva and few other treatements(Trials). With all the treatements had a quality time(with few Hiccups(Pain)) till Jan 2009.

METS in his Right acetabulum(Feb 2009) were treated by 15 cycles of RADIOTHREAPY.

Pain(Aug 2008 - till date) is being treated by Fentanyl Patches 50 mg, Morphine Tablets 40 mg per day, Fortwin Injections SOS.

Since then Tumor started obstructing D2(Duodenum) which stopped food further going down through Duodenum.
Vomiting made him weak. So, Docs decided for STENTS(SEMS) twice. STENTS helped in tolerating food, passing motion & urine for 3 months.
Again the same phase of vomiting has started since April which made further weak and an Endoscopy reveled of STENTS blocked with Tumor.

Docs decided to go for Gastric Jejunostomy/Feeding Jejunostomy. They were able to do Gastric Jejunostomy(June 2009). Even this happiness wasn't last long for more than 10 days.
Adodmen started filling up with Fluid(Ascites). Since his CT's revealed OMENTAL NODES around intenstines. This Fluid started decompressing the STOMACH. Vomiting started again, This again took DAD on to bed making him weak, unable even to walk till WASH ROOM.

Doc's decided to put NASAL Tube for nutritional Support & cautioned us that his disease is in Advanced Stage. They were surprised about his SPAN after the first Surgery. NOW he is in his 3 rd year 3 months(3.3).

This Surprise & Confusion phase again started since July 20, DAD was thrown to SEMI COMTOSE stage. Despite Doctors several attempts to bring him back from this Stage hasn't helped for 4 days. All the doctors say was DAD has couple of hours to be with the family.

A Surprise today morning(July 27, 2009) made him to talk asking for water. Recognising people in slow voice, complaining about pain.
Doctors says it is a MIRACLE.

Please help in understanding what exactly is DAD going through...is it a MIRACLE or is it creating FALSE HOPE among the family.

This Woke up phase has the pain again which is being treated by Fentayl patches, Morphine tablets.

Please help in understanding what exactly is DAD going through...is it a MIRACLE or is it creating FALSE HOPE among the family.

All want to do is to SHUT for an answer.

Vamsi, I am very sorry about your father's advanced Pancreatic Cancer. I have often thought and said that Pancreatic Cancer is one of the worse cancers because it is so hard to treat, there are too few long term effective treatments, and because of its devastating impact on quality of life.

I am not sure what it means that he has suddenly become more alert and responsive. Of course there is always the possibility however slime that he has indeed rebounded. However, there is the even greater possibility that this will just be a short rebound. You should make the most of this time of lucidity. Spend as much time as you can with him. Ask him to tell you stories about his life. Of course, tell him how you feel about him and his positive influence on your own life.

You and your father are in my thoughts and prayers.

Vamsi:

it does sound like he may just have a few days with you guys. I think previous post, sorry dont have name in front of me, was the best advise.

He may have things he wants to share, tell you and other family.
Try to tell him what you need to.

Your Dad has survived and FOUGHT this monster longer then most. This might be his time to just relax with his loved ones before he goes.

I hope you and your family draw on each other the love and support
you need.

With the best of intentions,

I can only pray with you and hope you and your family can spend the time needed together. As I sit here, mama is heading back to Duke Hospital to be drained from her stomach. One day is great then the next is a bed riddin day. I myself am in denial. This cant be happening to my mother, my best friend. We were dianosed on May 26th and it doesnt look in our favor. I know exactly how you feel with the "not" knowing what is going on. Just pray that your dad is not in pain and God is waiting for his return.

Vamsi, I want to thank you for sharing your story and that of your father. Doing so helped a number of people neither of you is likely to ever meet, and that is a very generous thing. I hope you were helped too by your postings, and I wish you fond memories and good luck in the days ahead.
