Hi, We had a family reunion at brother Bob's house this past Sat 12 04. He related well with all of the 25 relatives we had there and seemed in good spirits. He was in the end of his 5 th week of Temodar and RT so he was tired. Since then Bob had some seziures that put him in the emergency room. Yesterday the 10th, when I talked to Bob on the phone he asked who I was 5 times, mid sentence his words turned to gibberess, could not hear/or understand me frequently, cried, and forgot what he was saying mid sentence! Is this an outcome of the treatment or failure of the treatment? If it is the later what other ways will the tumor growth effect his life and mental status? I live in NC and Bob lives in NY so I can't see him every day. Something seems to have gone very wrong and I'm scared! Should I go to him to be with him while he still knows me? Oh yeah, the hospital said Bob siziures was caused by a Dilantin unbalance. Bob ripped the leads off himself and walked out of the hospital- he is 6'4" and a strong, healthy man with his brain tumor( not a good thing to do but the hospital said was not unusal for a 1st seziure). I need help in understand what is going on and what to do next. Anyone? Thanks for listening and may all cancer patients and there families be at peace.
Fred

PS I wish this Yahoo group had a spell checker!

Hello

I think it can be either thing. With treatment there may be a lot of tissue breakdown, which can cause some swelling of the surrounding brain tissue. But as you know, it may also be that his tumor is progressing. One thing is for sure, if he is developing all these problems, make sure there is someone with him at all times, as you never know what might happen. The course of these patients with high-grade brain tumors are quite unpredictable.

best regards,
Leo

I'm definitely not an expert, and all brain tumors effect everyone differently, as well as the treatments. But I agree with the last reply. My grandmother was diagnosed with a brain tumor just over 4 years ago and she had symptoms somewhat similar to your brother, for example getting into wrong cars in parking lots, putting her clothes on backwards, and losing a drive for knowledge that she'd had all of her life, but these all occured before the tumor was found.
She never underwent any treatments other than the biopsy to diagnose it, because she never really woke up from the procedure. But during her more aware moment she didn't know who she or anyone else is. I don't want to scare you, not by any stretch of the imagination, but from the CAT scan until death we only had approx 6 weeks with my grandmother. If you're worried about it, or thinking about going to be with him, then my suggestion is to go. That way no matter what happens you will not have any regrets.

Good luck,
Darby
