Hi Group:

I'll just ask, is kidney ca. hereditary?? My bf's Dad died very quickly from it, but I think it was in late stages. Then his aunt recently also
diagnosed with it? Both in his dad and aunt it spread to the lungs. With
his dad it spread to the brain as well.

If anybody knows, please respond????

thanks again,
Denise

Hi - there may be a genetic predisposition to cancer, but the only genuinely identified gene I can think of is BRCA which leads to Breast Cancer.

If you are concerned, I would seek the advice of a specialist oncologist in this field.

The last time I read anything on the subject of genetics and cancer, there were only two types of cancer that seem to have a "hereditary" factor: Is Vee said, one is Breast Cancers; the other are Colorectal Cancers. As far as I know, Kidney Cancers are not hereditary.

Risk factors include the following:

* Smoking. major risk factor. Cigarette smokers are twice as likely as nonsmokers to develop kidney cancer.
* long-term or heavy use of certain painkillers (phenacetin-based analgesics)
* Arrow Having certain genetic conditions, such as Von Hippel-Lindau disease or hereditary papillary renal cell carcinoma. (Two patients of my RCC patients group have genetic factor, both of their father were diagnosis RCC.)(VHL is a rare disease that runs in some families. It is caused by changes in the VHL gene. An abnormal VHL gene increases the risk of kidney cancer. It also can cause cysts or tumors in the eyes, brain, and other parts of the body. Family members of those with this syndrome can have a test to check for the abnormal VHL gene. For people with the abnormal VHL gene, doctors may suggest ways to improve the detection of kidney cancer and other diseases before symptoms develop. )
* Obesity, being overweighted
* long-term dialysis(Dialysis is a treatment for people whose kidneys do not work well. It removes wastes from the blood.)Dialysis patients with acquired cystic disease of the kidney showed a 30 times greater risk than in the general population for developing RCC.
* exposure to the solvent trichloroethylene.
* high blood pressure (hypertension)
* African ancestry
* drinking water that contains high levels of arsenic.
* Some people have a higher risk of getting kidney cancer because they come in contact with certain chemicals or substances in their workplace. People who come in contact with coke (used in steel production), asbestos or cadmium may have a higher risk of getting kidney cancer.
* Some people develop kidney cancer without any of these risk factors.

About these factors, most people who have these risk factors do not get kidney cancer. On the other hand, most people who do get the disease have no known risk factors.I know 2 patients in my kidney cancer patients group (about 50 patients in the group) their father had kidney cancer too.

I had testicle cancer and I am going to start the chemio this week.

When i had a visit with a medic he wanted to take some of my blood and sperm aswell to do an exam because he said recent studies may demonstrate that this type of cancer can be hereditary because of a problem in dna gene Y (male X female Y, that ones)... Dunno if it can help, it's just to add my own experience
