Good afternoon,

My father is 65 and has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer. It has a high Gleason score but is still contained within the prostate currently. The doctor has suggested tomotherapy but it begins with hormone therapy.

This is all very new to us as he was only diagnosed recently and was only prescribed the hormones yesterday. The doctor thinks he will be on them for three years.

I would be very interested to hear people's views and experiences of being put on hormones as my father is, obviously, concerned.

Thank you in advance.

The standard protocol s ADT3, Lupron. Casodex and Proscar. Casodex should be given at least 7 days before Lupron to avoid flair.
Excercise is mandatory and should include weights. Add Femera to stop any breast growth. A bone density should be given to get a baselne for any bone loss. An echo stress test is also recommended because HT is hard on the heart.
A good book is "Beating Prostate Cancer through Hormone Therapy and Diet" by Dr Charles Myers.
If your doctor is not doing all of the above I would question him.
The affects of HT are different for everyone, some patients handle it well for years.
Some side affects are:
Loss of libido
weight gain and muscle loss
breast growth
depression.
Best of luck on your dads treatments.
Johnt
