Hi there,

my friend was just diagnosed (33yrs old; 4cm Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, likely 1 node but not biopsied; ER+, PR+, HER2-) and is going to start AC+Taxol soon. she's interested in pursuing complimentary treatments to deal with the side effects of the treatment. if anyone's tried this and can share their experience, that would be great!

thanks,
traci

Complementary therapies on chemo are a massive topic. People have their own methods of coping. I take a small range of supplements - Resveratrol, CoQ10 [100mg per day], Cod liver Oil, a multivitamin once weekly. Four days before chemo treatment I take Astragalus to boost the white cells. They maintain my general health, which helps to counteract chemo effects.

Dealing with specific side-effects is more difficult. There are a number of emollients that can be used on skin disruptions. There is very little to be done about neuropathies apart from painkillers.

There is a "cold cap" treatment [done while having the chemo infusions] which many claim prevents hair loss. I gave it up as more uncomfortable than losing my hair, but if it can be borne, it is worth trying. I believe that cold compresses on hands and feet can reduce nail loss, but that is more difficult to arrange during the chemo infusions.

I am sure others will have their own experiences to share.

One thing I would advise is be very, very cautious about miracle products, and make sure the oncology team are fully aware of what is being done.

Thanks, Vee.

I will certainly pass on the information (both the supplements you took and the advice to be reasonably skeptical and make sure her doctor knows anything she does).

I'd love to hear any other feedback people have as well.

best,
