I'm not quite sure how to post so if this comes through twice, please accept my apology
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Havefaith, I also was just diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer (Papillary Carcinoma). This comes after being a 14 year breast cancer survivor. My endocrynologist referred me to an Otolaryngolgy surgeon tomorrow, at which time I guess I will receive details concerning the Stage, etc.

May I ask how did it come about with the entire body scan? I currently have a concern about bone cancer, as well, and not sure if this is something that is automatically done one thyroid cancer has been diagnosed.

I truly wish you all the luck. Because we both are relatively new to this, please feel free to contact me at anytime as we can possibly help each other through each step of the way.

hi anyar
i am realy sorry that you have to live the cancer roed again.
but i am sure that evey thing will be just fine because papilary cancer have a good pnostic and survive rate is 95% and is a slow cancer.
for myself they said i have thyroid cancer folliculaire a more agressive one but still better than the others left the meddulary.. i did'nt have my whole body scan is due for a month, i think i will have a 131 iode radiation theraphy, different than radiation, is to kill the thyroid cell or the cancer cell left since my last surgery( a thyroidectomy total).
thyroid cancer therapy gonna be in most part for you by the same way is the iode radiation therapy, better than chemotherapie because there no side effect, ask your doctor if i am not mistaken. yes i was saying for follicular the pronostic if the person is young and don t have metastas but still good pronostic.

Hi, Havefaith:

I noticed that you said you're body scan will not take place for another month. So have they already performed a Thyroidectomy or do they plan to do so? If not, what is your treatment plan?

I just got home from my doctor appointment. He is an Otolaryngolgy surgeon that my Endo referred me to.

I had over 11 questions to ask, most of which focused on staging and metastasis. He was kind and very patient, and answered them all.

First, he told me that the cancer is in the very early stages, likely around a Stage 1. Unfortunately, they will not know for sure until after the Thyroidectomy, which I have scheduled for November 5th.

For ages 20-40, there is a 95% cure rate. I'm 51 y/o, but he stated that I was still on the border with a good cure rate. But, as with anyone, there is always that small percentage that it could reappear in the lymph nodes of the neck, in the chest area, the bones or the lungs.

Once surgery has been completed, I will not take Thyroid medication the first month because I will be on radioactive iodine (I think I heard that right). A full body scan would then be performed which would show other potential areas where the cancer could have metastasized.

However, he did mention that because I would not be on Thyroid medication immediately after surgery, I will be extremely tired and possibly a little crazy.

(OH MY! CAN I GET ANY CRAZIER? LOL)

In addition, he also suggested a bone scan as the whole body scan detects cancer a little differently.

Well, I'm a pretty resiliant person, and bounce back from things pretty easy. When I had breast cancer in 1996, I went back to work the next week after surgery because I had to do something with myself. And, I worked every single day, then left work and went to the hospital for treatment, then went home and cooked dinner, then went to bed, and start all over the next day. I know it was a lot but it kept me from dealing with reality.

I actually finished my last treatment on my birthday (Dec 11). The nurses brought in a birthday cake and gave me a little party. LOL

So once treatment was over, I put it behind me. And whenever doctors would ask when I had cancer, I could hardly tell them.

Then when I discovered I had Thyroid Cancer, it was kind of a mixed reaction. I was really angry at first, and didn't want to pray. Then I went into denial. Then I just dealt with it because I realized God brought breast cancer to my attention early in 1996, and he did the same with thyroid cancer. I got through it the first time, and I'll get through this.

So, once I come through this, the same will likely happen. I'll put it all behind me and move on with my life.

So when you had surgery, did you immediately go on medication? If not, how long did it take to start meds and how did you feel without the meds?

hi anyar,

thanks alot for your reply.

first thing you need to know, is when i had my surgery they did'nt know if is gonna be cancer, they know a month later last monday when the surgon got th pathology report.

after the surgery i din't have any pain in my neck only in my chest, the scar was small in the neck, so no problem but for the sternutomy, it was painful without the morphine or when i move my chest in the bed.

the doctor give me syntroid( syntetic hormone) since the first day post surgery.

i don't know if i gonna have to stop the syntroid before my iodineradiation therapy, maybe they gonna give me the human syntetic tsh before the treatement this is possible in canada, i really don ' t have a idea. i am still waiting the secretary of the doctor to call me and tell me more detail.

by the way what is the meaning of your name anyar.
my name is zakia, god bless and stay strong.

Wow! You're dealing with a log, especially as such a young and precious age. I would definitely like to stay in touch and stay updated on what's going on with you. For now, I'm done with doctors until my surgery on Nov 5th.

My name is actually Rayna, which stands for Queen (in French) and Princess (in Spanish). Unfortunately, I have neither the wealth nor status of either! LOL

I used Anyar (Rayna spelled backwards) as my screen name for sites I go on. Right now I'm an unemployed IT worker looking for work, and many companies will Google or Bing your name to find information. I have nothing to hide, but it doesn't help either if they know I have cancer and looking for work! LOL

God Bless you, sweetie, and defintely stay in touch.

Hi raina

i am really sorry that you lost your job, but let me tell you problems never come alone, so you have cancer+ lost your job and sure other stuff too. believe we are all in same both.

really you must have the faith to said what will happen will happen, nobody can stop it, do what the doctors ask you and let the rest to god. everything will be just fine.

let me tell you the test you gonna brobably ask to have:

-first surgery
-blood test many of them TSH, calcium, paratyroid function.
-maybe a iodine radiation+ whole body scan..
-syntroid+ maybe other drugs after surgery like vitamin d calcium, pain killer, laxatif..
- maybe other test to depend if the lymph node is infected..

about the doctors they are so different, i did have one surgon so kind, and he listen to me but it was a cardiotoracix surgon so i don't have to see him anymore, it is too bad. the one i am stok with right now he is strange, i don't anderstand him yet he is a enigma for me. he told me on the phone that they found cancer, no i am sorry from his partor for the news or don't worry everything will be fine nothing. like if he is telling me i have flu Shocked

by the way this forum is so good for me, is like a group therapy in your own house, coz i can tak about my cancer because nobody of my family or friend know about it, so it is feel good to have someone to talk with.

take care, god bless you dear.

Oh my GOD! Zakia! You need to complain. Now.

It is good to have patience but this is your life that they are playing with. This is no good. Talk to a cancer advocacy group about this. It has been nearly a year since this all began. This is way too long.

Get one of these organisations involved on your behalf. They know the system well and can help you properly!

Take care of yourself, Aisha.

Hi aisha,

i read the site you give me. why i can't have my whole scan until december is because i had a ct scan the last time i was in the emergency, coz of this scan i gonna wait longer. the doctor when he call me he said he want to see me in a month but i call them back to tell them about my scan. because to have a whole body scan with iodine ,you must not have contract at least 3 months before Sad

maybe the waiting is better, god never do bad plan for us, but we want everything fast and righ now. few months ago, i was fighting docs and scared and i did want everything to go very quikely because i was afraid for my life. but now i am more relax about it. i am done with fighting everything that is not going like i want. there is a proverb who said, i want and you want and god make what he want Very Happy

i really like the fact that you never complain about the fact that you have cancer, you complain about the pains and everything but not the fact that u have cancer. good girl Very Happy
