ok, after many years, we finally had a biopsy of the "thing" on My boyfriends back. It is Basal cell carcinoma. The Dr referred us to a derm. office, when we called, they just scheduled surgery, no talking, or looking, or anything. This is a 2"x3" wound, over his spine, on his back. I am very nervous that no one talked to us, and that the surgery is a month out just gives me time to worry. We don't have insurance, so there will be no running to various doctors, plus we are in a rural area, and I think this is our only option. So does anyone know what kind of recovery they might expect for something like this?? I would like to know how much time we might each want off work. Any help is appreciated. They say this won't kill him, but it is still so scary!

I just had a mole that was melanoma removed from the back of my head. They took out about 3x3 worth of skin. They had to stretch the skin to cover the hole which made it extemly tight for a few weeks. I am about a month out of the surgery and everthing this good here. I dont think I would have been able to get through it as well as I did with out the pain killers but I was back at work within 5 days. Im no derm but I would think there would be a little more extra skin to cover the whole on your back then on your skull. Good luck to you!

I've had three spots of basal cell carcinoma removed. My largest was about the size of a quarter. Mine wasn't that painful, but it was on my arm, so sitting and standing weren't uncomfortable. I had mine removed on a Thursday and was back to work on Monday.

Just a recommendation, I would try and get the dermatologist to show your boyfriend what kinds of spots to look for in the future. I had one dermatologist who really 'taught' me what to look for. I can see them now when they are very small. I usually catch them before the dermatologist does.
