Hi, I'm 43 years old, was first diagnosed with HPV when I was about 25, but at that time really didn't know much about it. I remember my gyn telling me that I had an "HPV-like" virus, but it wasn't HPV, and I had cryosurgery done (this was after a colpo). Many years later and after earning my RN, I know this doesn't really make sense. However, the one thing I do know is he said it wasn't the type that put me at risk for cancer. HPV has never reared it's ugly head since, and I've had 3 kids and many yearly paps. This year I had my annual pap (not the same gyn as i had years ago) and it came back abnormal, so I had a colpo done with biopsies. I just was told today that I have HPV 16 and high grade dysplasia. I'm going for a LEEP and cone biopsy (in his office, only with local anesthesia!), and am terrified that they will find malignant cells. I need someone to calm me down!! I keep telling myself that it's only dysplasia, that I don't need to worry, but I can't help my mind going. Does anyone know the statistics, the chances of this being more at this point - especially with it being HPV 16 (I know that's high risk). Please give me any insight you can offer. thanks so much!!!!!

Hi peachmarie,

First off, i'm so sorry that you are going through all of this right now. Sometimes the worst part about going through this whole ordeal is the waiting.

Wow! your doctor is going to do a cone biopsy under local anesthesia! You are a braver woman than me!

But to the question at hand, I do not have any numbers or data that I could give to you, but yes, HPV 16 is one of the high risk strains of HPV. Very possible that it could have been dormant for all of these years and decided now would be the perfect time to show up.

I know you probably know this, but there isn't much we can tell you until you get the biopsy done and get the results, but again....waiting and doing the biopsy is the hard part! Very Happy All you can really do at this point is try to stay calm.

One thing you can think about is that you have been very vigilant about your yearly pap. This is great! Cervical cancer moves very predictably and usually slowly. If anything were to be there, we are catching it early enough to do something! In some cases depending on the severity of the situation, the cone biopsy is enough treatment and no cells have invaded deeper.

Maybe just hum in your head "don't worry be happy" by Bobby McFerrin. That song usually puts me in a good mood. Very Happy
