So about a month ago, I was fooling around in history class when I noticed a small lump on the right side of my neck, behind the bend in my jawbone. I thought it was nothing to worry about because I had a sore throat the week before, so I left it alone.

Now, a month later, it is still there. It doesn't seem to have changed very much. It is oval and fairly regular in shape. It is about 1 cm in length and half a cm in width. It's firm but not rock hard. It's painless, and it seems fixed to the underlying tissue of my neck. It's not sore or anything, and can't be seen but is palpable when I turn my head to the left. It seems like it becomes more prominent when I touch it for a while, so does that mean it reacts to my touch?

Anyway, no other symptoms are present; I've been feeling perfectly healthy. I'm a 14-year-old boy, and I'm really worried about this mass. Could it be a cyst? Infection? Abscess? Knot? Benign tumor like lipoma? Or malignant...? I want to add that I do have a gum abscess at the moment. Should I be concerned?

Hi - could be any of those things. If you have an abscess on your gum, it may well be linked and be an infection. I suggest you go and see your doctor. Antibiotics may deal with it.

This sounds like a swollen lymph gland from having a sore throat. I used to get those all the time. They are more easily detectable in young, thin people. If that's what it is, it will go away in time. Your doctor can tell you for sure probably.
