What is the normal protocol for post-op follow up testing for Stage III rectal cancer? My husband just completed 6 weeks radiation with continuous 5FU infusion. He has 8 more treatments of CPT11 and 5FU. Onc said first CT scan will be 3 months after chemo ends. His surgery was May 2004. Margins were clear but close--2 nodes involved. According to Drs schedule his first CT won't be until April 2005. Seems like a long time to wait for testing. Shouldn't he have at least one CT now to make sure the chemo is working?

Hello

Doctors differ on how the follow treatment. Some may watch more closely than others, and even get a CT to assess response. You should discuss about this with your doctor, but there are no strict guidelines for that.

regards,
Leo

Thanks for the reply Leo. We followed your advise and still have not settled this with the Dr to our satisfaction. His attitude towards treatment for a recurrence did not sit well with us. However, I'm glad to hear there is no standard protocol so we'll continue our discussions with the doctor.
Thanks again and for putting together this forum. It's great.
