Just wondering if this is common.

I had a tumor removed from my right lateral ventricle in October of last year and also had VP Shunt surgery in December due to complications of related to Hydrocephalus.

Following both surgeries, I was symptom free. Prior to the tumor removal, I had four Petit Mal seizures which barely went noticed. About a week ago, I had my first Grand Mal seizure. Fortunately, I was at home and in bed but scrambled my brain for a couple of days.

Now, I know I've been told that seizures are somewhat common following brain surgery but six months out? Anyone else experience this?

Of course, I've been restricted from driving and am back on the Dilantin until I see my Neurosurgeon on April 7th. I've had both a CT scan and MRI and they came back normal.

Thanks to all who reply to this.

Hello

Anytime you have some sort of trauma or surgery on your brain, chances are high that seizures might happen. There is a good chance you will be on seizure medications chronically.

regards,
Leo

I had the same surgery(tumour same area) November 2003 but didn't require shunt and had no seizures.I can't drive and never will again because of permanent balance problems and vertigo.Guess its individual thing.

I am in the EXACT same boat. I had a tumor removed this past March (neurocytoma) and then had to have 3 surgeries afterwards that eventually resulted in having to have a shunt "installed". 2 days ago, I was at work when, apparently, I had a grand mal seizure. I am terrified now. I don't want to have one again, of course. But what about driving???
My neuro repremanded me because he was convinced that this was a result of not taking my medicaion (I am on 330 mg of Dilantin/day), but I swear on my LIFE I have not missed a dose since being on it.
I don't know what to do. Crying or Very sad

That was a while ago. I've since changed meds (to Topamax 100 mg, 2x/ day), as well as changed my neurologist. So far so good on the Topamax, no side effects except weight loss and less of an appetite, but I had gained weight in the hospital, so I am not complaining at all! Cool

PS - Couldn't drive for 3 months, but got the OK from my new neuro thiswas Dec 17. If there are days that I am feeling under the weather at all though (headache, dizzy, etc), I use my judgement and either get a ride into work or just stay home if I really don't feel well (very rare though).
