Hi All,
My mom was diagnosed stage 4 NSCLC in June of this year. She originally had mets to her left shoulder and lymph nodes. The lung tumor was about 7cm. in diameter. Surgery was not an option and mom chose not to have chemo. She had radiation on her shoulder and lung to help reduce the pain in these areas. She was on a steady diet of Tylenol 3's. Last week, the doctor decided to move her up to low dose Morphine. Ever since, she has been complaining about horrible pain in her right hip. It looks like the cancer has spread and we are awaiting the x-ray results. It turns out that she hasn't been taking the Morphine unless she has been absolutely at her wit's end from the pain. She claims that she feels light headed and dizzy when she takes them. Will she eventually get used to the Morphine or should we be looking for something else? She collapsed recently and it was determined that she was dehydrated so I'm wondering if she is getting dehydrated again and that could be cause of her symptoms. Can anyone tell me about their experiences with morphine for cancer treatment? Thanks.

Many people use Duragesic patches because of fewer side effects although these patches can have siome of the same side effects as morphine.

A patch lasts for 3 days and the dose is more evenly distributed than the pills. The medication is a synthetic opiate and is more potent than morphine in a dose to dose comparison.

My Wife had side effects from both the morphine pills and the patches.

She did fairly well with a combination of Neurontin, Cataflam, Ultram, and Tylenol. None of these are opiates and had few side effects.

Hope this helps.
