I'm a 35 yr old female. What are the chances that my pituitary tumor is cancerous? How would a doctor tell from the MRI when it was first discovered. As of last October it was 6mm - how large is too large for these types of tumors and when should they be removed. I am hypopituitary and my dr said even if he removes it at this time most likely my hormone levels won't go back to normal. I'm deficient in growth hormone, aldosterone, estradiol, hypothyroid. Thanks.

Hi

The most likely tumor of the pituitary is an adenoma, a tumor that is not malignant, but because it compresses the pituitary it causes several problems as you described with all your hormonal deficits. The problem is that when surgery is performed they usually remove the whole pituitary gland, so whatever was there is going to be gone, and the hormones will have to be replaced for life.

Your tumor is small, but even at this size it is already causing hormonal problems. Discuss with your doctor about the benefits and risks of taking it out. It's hard for me to council you without having a real evaluation.
