Hello

The diagnosis for APL is not difficult, usually flow cytometry of peripheral blood and bone marrow can diagnose it. Treatment is usually in the form of ATRA, an oral medication, and chemotherapy. It is one of the most treatable acute leukemias.

I actually have APL leukemia and have undergone chemo and am currently on ATRA. During my month in the hospital I ended up with pretty nasty back pain that is still going on (a little over a year later) but the doctors think it's unrelated to cancer. As far as long term effects, I shouldn't have any. I've been told this is typical for APL patients as long as chemotherapy works. Lemme know if there's anything else I can tell you.

I've also been treated for APL and towards the end of my hospital stay they had a hard time drawing blood and getting IV sites to work for more than a day. They told me it was because the veins harden and lose elasticity. Is this something that is reversed with time, or is there some medication or herb that I can take?

Hello

Problems with veins is usually due to several blood draws, and more importantly, chemotherapy which can damage the veins. It usually does not get better, and there is not much to do.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN TAKING CHEMO. I CAUGHT SOMETHING WHILE TAKING CHEMO, AND WOUND UP GOING INTO SEPTIC SHOCK. I NEARLY DIED. I SUFFERED 3 STROKES AND LOST ALL MY TOES DUE TO LOW BLOOD PRESSURE. I HAD TO LEARN EVERY ASPECT OF MY LIFE OVER. I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR 91 DAYS. SO PLEASE, WHEN THEY TELL YOU TO WEAR A MASK OUT, DO IT.
