Hi, I was just wondering if others with Uternine cancer have been warned to stay away from soy. I have yet to get a "regular" oncologist (no inusrance so its been a real struggle), but my radiation oncologist and gynecologist said to stay away from soy milk and soy products. I have noticed virtually more than half the products in grocery stores contain some degree of soy. Any ideas as to what constitutes too much soy in these products? Good grief, almost all the salad dressings, breads, even canned tuna has it! Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Hi RMaureen, I don't know what type of uterine cancer you have been diagnosed with, but in my research I have found that some forms (particularly endometrial) have estrogen receptors. Soy is often used as an alternative therapy for estrogen replacement after menopause, so if your particular type of cancer is sensitive to estrogen, it is certainly possible that soy could have a negative effect. You should find out from your doc if your particular cancer is estrogen driven.
Best of luck to you and God bless.

Since treatment for endometrial cancer I have started using soya milk as an alternative to dairy milk, as I thought it was supposed to have less harmful oestrogen in it, at lower levels. I am now very confused, could someone explain which is better and why? I hate to think I've been making things worse for myself.
Thanks.

Google soy+cancer and you'll get an equal amount of websites saying soy fights cancer as there is saying soy causes cancer. Here's one against soy - http://www.mercola.com/2000/aug/20/soy_dangers.htm. Click on the links at the bottom of the page to read further on it.

I first looked into soy and it's adverse effects over 10 years ago because of a thyroid condition I had. Since then my opinion is - soy is not the wonder food that it's cracked up to be. It's simple logic but, how can soy be equally as good as a milk formula for babies AND a hormone replacement for menopausal women and good for everyone else in between? It just doesn't make sense!! Babies don't need extra oestrogen! In fact I've read that soy formula brings on early puberty in girls, some as young as 9 months old!!

Soy is big business - lotsa money in soy products so it's in their interestes to promote soy.
Soy is also THE most genetically modified food in the world.

I could go on and on as to why I've reached my conclusion but you need to make your own mind up.

There are other alternatvies to cows milk besides soy, namely rice milk and oat milk.

Cheers

I had my first visit with an oncologist two days ago; his opnion was this consumption of soy products does not hurt; he said there is debate regarding the issue in the medical community. My gynecologist, and radiation oncologist believe it does have a negative effect, and I have to concur with Olly's post. I have noticed how soy is in so many products. I have grown rather leary of it, so I personally intend to limit my soy intake.

I hate to harp on about something, but it's been my experience that doctors don't know everything!! They know what they've been taught and specialised in and that's that unless they've taken the time and trouble to educate themselves further.

They know sod all about nutrition, vitamins/minerals or soy etc and how it effects you or your ailments because that's not what they've learnt, and bugger all of their training was spent on it.

Your gynie SHOULD know how soy effects you or your treatment because it's a gynies job to know about hormones and how yours can be effected or how your hormones can effect you! It sounds like your gynie and your radiation oncologist are both on the ball.

As for the other oncologist you saw (medical oncologist for chemo?), It's my guess he's not up to scratch on the topic of soy and just thinks it's a food like any other. I'd be using your own common sense on the matter.

Cheers
Olly

Thanks for the post Olly, I most certainly agree. I got the impression this oncologist viewed it as a frivilous matter not to be concerned with. You are right, a gynecologist should know the effects of certain foods concerning estrogen production; I just thought the oncologist could elaborate on what degree of soy intake was permissible. He never once mentioned diet, or nutrition; and I certainly believe that is particularly relevant for anyone diagnosed with cancer.

I will not be drinking soy milk, eating tofu,...but I am concerned about soy in so many products. Must be a very cheap element in mass production of edible consumer goods; somehow I doubt it's in all these products for our nutritional benefit, although I am sure that's what some products intend. As for me, I am going to steer clear from it as much as I can
