Hello,
I lost my mother with liver cancer Dec 19th 2006. She had a cancerous kidney removed one year before the liver cancer was detected. So I think this is a bit like what your post was. She died 13 months after finding out she was sick. The treatments were so painful for her. I feel bad the amount of pain she went threw and nothing helped.
If you want to email me feel free.

All the best to you and your family.

Liver metastasis is different from primary liver cancer. Many people often confuse this issue. It sounds like your Mom has colon cancer first that spread to the liver, a common site for metastasis. This means she has advanced colon cancer, stage IV. Has she received any treatment yet? If not, there is a chance that her disease can be controlled if it responds to treatment. However, realize at this stage, cure is unrealistic. But yes the disease can be controlled, and can significantly extend her life and quality of life. Depending on the extent of liver involvement, it may or may not cause symptoms. If it is extensive, you may start to see signs of liver failure. I would inquire more with your medical team about the situation.

My father died from liver failure last year. He was ill but able to look after himself at home for some weeks. He spent the last week of his life in hospital with ascites (fluid build-up in the abdomen) and jaundice. Sometimes liver failure can cause mental confusion, but this does not necessarily happen; my father was lucid and knew who was speaking to him until the end. A couple of days before he died he was very weak but smiling and talking and making little jokes. He was in pain for the last day, but this was because he was not given any pain medication except paracetemol because he was not expected to die. I don't think that death from liver failure is a bad death compared with many.

You might want to read the thread "Life expectancy - liver metastasis"; currently about halfway down the screen in this forum. About the 8th post in this thread is from paulsdaughter, who gievs a description of her father's death with might give you some help.
