Depending on the stage of the cancer and your father's other medical problems, he may only need radiation. I'm assuming you already met with a urologists. Often early stage prostate cancer can be handled by the urologist and radiation oncologist. Ask at your next visit what the entire treatment plan entails.

Radiation therapy for early stage prostate cancer usually consists of 8 - 10 weeks of treatment. Treatments are given Mon-Fri for around 40 - 45 treatments plus 2 or 3 planning simulations.
Your father will start with the consult and then probably have an appointment made for a Simulation. The Simulation can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour. After the simulation your father would most likely start his daily treatments a week later. Each daily treatment takes anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 minutes each day.
With early stage prostate cancers usually only radiation therapy is needed and sometimes hormone therapy depending on the situation. The radiation is painless and side effects are usually kept to a minimum with recent advancements in treatment technology and techniques.
I am a radiation therapist and I see 30 - 40 prostate cancer patients a day.
Details on the radiation therapy treatment process for prostate cancer can be found here at http://www.prostate-answers.com/radiation-timeline.html

Remember to ask alot of questions during the consult. I know alot of patients are so overwhelmed they forget half of what is said in the consult.
