I'm trying to get info about this type leukemia. My step dad was diagnosed last week and just finished his first week of chemo treatment. What can we expect this next week as far as side effects and reactions and just things to watch for? He has bad rashes all over his body and purple marks and blotches everwhere. Is that a normal reaction? Any info would be helpfull!
Thank you!
Kathy

I am moving your message to the leukemia forum below. I might find help there.

AML or acute myelogenous leukemia includes a spectrum of AML sub-types now being grouped by genetic analysis. If your step-dad is undergoing his 1st round of chemotherapy, it is called induction therapy - trying to induce a remission. This intensive chemotherapy will often cause all his blood counts to be very low including his platelets. Thus by having very low platelets, he will bruise very easily. Sometimes people may form a rash from the chemotherapy or other drugs he received. Without, knowing the exact chemotherapy agents and complete medication list, it's difficult to say more. I encourage you to ask at your next meeting with the medical team.

This first stage is awful, you can expect any kind of reactions. After a few weeks hopefully he will be stable.

Good luck.
