Hello,

I am glad to have found this forum. I'm 33 y.o female with a toddler and 12 year old son and hubby. My mother died from HCC at age 47 and my sister died at age 38 from the same. It's an unusual family history because we are not asian and although my mother may have had hepatitis, my sister did not. I started doing surveillance ultrasounds last year and my annual U/S this year showed a few abnormalities. I now am getting a contrast CT tomorrow. I'm terrified and am thinking the worst.

I just wanted to connect with someone who can empathize. I see from this forum there is more hope than I think. I'm glad.

Kate

Kate, I can only imagine the uncertainty that you feel today. Keep us informed. Make sure you ask your doctors all the questions you have. We cannot “diagnose” you over the internet, but maybe we can help you understand what the doctors are telling you.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers tomorrow.

Preliminary results of my CT showed no enhancing intrahepatic mass but a fluid collection causing slight mass effect on my liver. The fluid collection was posterior R lobe between my liver and abdominal wall. So, I'm off to the hepatologist. And to get an U/s of the pelvic region too.

Hello Kate,

I don't mean to scare you but just a suggestion that no matter what your hepatologist says, go for a second opinion. Not that I'm saying don't trust your doctors but sometimes, you can get a new insight from another doctor. And in your case, I feel it's better to err on the safe side. Remember, you stand a good chance of getting cured if you catch HCC early by surgery.

You mentioned your mum had hepatitis? So I assume you've already been tested for Hepatitis B and C? If not, pls do so immediately. HepB and C increases your risk of developing HCC by a few hundred times. It's a major cause of HCC (apart from alchohol) so you better know if you have it. And if you are a carrier, you had better take steps to prevent it spreading to your family.

I hope i don't sound too scary but since you seem to be at some risk, I'm hoping you can take the necassary steps to prevent it while you still can.

regards,
seage

Well, I had my pelvic ultrasound today and their is an ovarian cyst on my right ovary. Probably benign but the statement was made "can't rule out neoplasm" so I'm in for a repeat scan in one month and another tumor marker for ovarian cancer. My AFP is pending.
I have been tested for hepatitis and all is negative. I've got immunity to Hep B due to getting the vaccine. Next stop is seeing the liver specialists to see what they think.
