Hi all...
My mom (64, NSCLC IV, with liver and bone metastasis) has had chemotherapy for two months (gemcitabine & carboplatin).
Last week doctors run tests again that showed a 10% shrinkage of her tumors. This is good, but not too good. Doctors were not very happy. They said that this result just showed a stabilization of her situation. They're thinking of changing her chemo drugs
Meanwhile, my mom had a blood transfusion, because her hematokrit was too low. Two days after we returned home she started having high fever and intense dyspnea. We went bach to hospital when new tests showed that she got... pneumonia. They believe that she got the virus when she was inside the hospital, because her immune system is not too strong right now, since she has been on chemo. Now she is getting antibiotics and feels very bad.
I don't have any question... Just wanted to share this... I feel bad too. I don't know what to do to protect her from getting sick from causes other than cancer now that her organism is so weak with the chemo and all...
I'm wondering... what do the statistics show about deaths coming to cancer patients because of treatment complications?
Thinking of you all and getting strength from you,
Mandy |

Mandy, I am sorry to hear about your Mom. (My thoughts will be with you both) I don't know stats right now in answer to your question. Sorry.
I was wondering though, if your Mom has been taking any natural immune enhancing products or foods? I've been reading alot about Reishi, Ahccs, melantoin, the P53 gene etc. which were posted on this site by members, I'm beginning to lean more towards believing in natural healing and control.
Here in Canada, back in the 1970's, I read an article on a woman who lived in Ontario who had been using some sort of herbal Indian tea with some of her patients (she was a nurse practioner) and the success rate was wonderful. Unfortunately, there was a cloud of controversy between her and the Canadian governement and eventually she relinquished the rights to the receipe to some Mfg. Company. I don't remember her name or any true details, but for some reason, her story has stayed with me for all of these years. I understand this type of therapy is iffy to many who are suffering from cancer, but in my gut, I feel there is an answer to this suffering.
Again, I truly hope your Mom will regain her strength and I think you are doing the best you can to protect her from unforseen elements that affect your Mom's illness.
Sincerely,
Jp _________________ Wisdom, Serenity and Courage. |

Hi Jp... thanks for your kind words.
I too have read a lot of things about special food, tea, etc. I have found a few things here in Greece, but my mom is not very openminded. She really tries to follow doctors' advice and eat well - good food, but she is reluctant in trying anything else... sometimes I get the impression that she doesn't really want to give a fight.
Getting to the story about the nurse that you wrote about, I have to tell you that last year we have witnessed a similar case in Greece. One pharmacist has been giving to cancer patients for a long time some natural product that he was making from a certain mushroom (ot tea? or something like that). The patients were supposed to be cured and he said he could prove that. The pharmaceutical companies attacked him, the government attacked him trying to prove that he was a crook, but patients kept coming out saying they have being cured.
Anyway, he has being asked to give away the receipe, but he has chosen to cooperate with a big pharmaceytical company. We haven't heard anything since. Was he a crook? I don't know. Was he for real and the big companies didn't want his "drug" out ? (as cheap as a mushroom). I don't know. Maybe his product had a placebo effect on his patients. I don't know. What I do know is that there are a lot of things that some companies don't want us to know...
Anyway...
Be well,
Thanks, Mandy |

Placebos are good...to a degree, state of mind can halt or change a bodies reaction. But if your Mum doesnt want anything more than she's comfortable with or even wants to pass.....there is nothing wrong with that either. We all die at some point. Its better if we choose our own time and way of passing.....and she may live for years by going the route she has chosen.
You dont have a say in this and shouldnt. Stay positive, love who and where she is right now and dont nag her about grasping on to time. If you want to create a placebo of your own......make her a meal everyday of mushrooms (in various meals)...and tell her that it can work wonders. See if that works? BTW if he was referring to magic mushrooms....dang...that would shove the drug company into panic mode. It would make her feel better in a psychedelic way...but probably wouldnt cure anything. |
