Hello,

I am a 27 year old male. About nine months ago, I noticed a swollen lymph node in my neck. It remains swollen and has not decreased in size. It does not hurt and is not tender. Around the same time, I started having night sweats, lost my appetite (and subsequently about 25 pounds.....from 180 to 155....and I'm 6'4!), and began suffering from extreme fatigue. I've had several visits to the doctor. All of the blood tests (and there were several) came back "normal". (ie: no infection) He gave me a full run of anti-biotics which had no effect. I haven't been to the doctor in over a month and I still feel the same way.

Over the weekend I noticed a pressure in my chest. I have a hard time describing it, but it has led me to be short of breath, but not seriously so. That coupled with the other symptoms have convinced me to go back to the doctor tomorrow.

Is there anything specific I should ask to have done? He seems a little baffled by my symptoms. My mother has Lupus and my Aunt was treated for Hodgkin's Disease last year (she is doing fine now). My symptoms sound similar to hers. Can anyone suggest any questions I should ask the doctor or any specific test to have done?

Thanks in advance,

Brady

Hi Brady,

Those symptoms all sound familiar to me (I have had NHD Lymphoma for at least three years so far) and I strongly urge you to see an oncologist or get a biopsy and probably a Ct-Scan. For some reason blood tests don't always reflect an accurate state of one's health, but every 3 months when I get a check up from my oncologist, his quiestions always start out the same:
Have you had night sweats, lost your appetite, are you suffering from extreme fatigue, etc....... The end of the visit always includes a physical exam (including checking of the actual lymph glands).

The toughest part for me was the helplessness of just waiting, and not knowing. Once you find out the true situation than you and your physician (as a team) can take charge of the situation. Or better yet perhaps, discover it is entirely something different. In either event, you'll be better off than you are now (I kept my head stuck in the sand for far too long).

Thanks for your reply Burt. My appointment is this afternoon. I'll be sure to ask about a possible biopsy. Odds are it will turn out to be nothing, but I don't want to take the risk. Thanks again.
