Hello everyone,
I'm hoping I'm in the right forum thread, if not please feel free to move the post.
My name is Carrie, and I'm 24 years old. For atleast 5 years, I have been suffering with severe abdominal pain, fatigue, joint pains, and strange bruising. I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), so my doctors have always attributed my fatigue to that. I have been to my general practioner over and over, and I have made more trips to the ER in agony than I care to recall. I have had HIDA Scans (pardon my ignorance, I'm not good with the terminology), MRIs, CT Scans, Ultra Sounds, an Endoscopy, and the lovely Colonoscopy.. you name it. I've had blood workup done, the whole nine. I have intense pain on my left side (abdomen) with a strange lump that's been there for a while. I was sent to a few different gastro specialists, and was told I have a lump there because I'm fat (which I admit I'm a little chunky but that's not a diagnosis in my eyes), and I've also been thrown into the catch-all category of IBS. The doctors at the ER twice (and my GP as recently as December 2008) have found that I have an enlarged liver. Instead of finding out why, they have assumed yet again.. since I'm heavy that's the reason it is enlarged. I also have strange brusing that I can't account for. The bruising is always a yellowy/greenish/dark color, and I tend to get them on the tops of my hands, legs, abdomen, and now my feet. For the past couple of weeks, I have been running a lowgrade fever (between 99.0 and 100.0), and have been keeping a journal of the day, time, and temp.
I was laid off and currently do not have insurance (although am on charity care for a year with my local hospital due to a sports injury I needed surgery for), so seeing my doctor really isn't an option. I figured I would take some initiative and search around the web to see if any of my symptoms corralate together and maybe I could look where doctors aren't. As I searched around, I found that Chronic Leukemia's tend to really sync-up with what I have. The more I read, the more I researched, the more it started to click with me. I'm not self-diagnosing, but everything really seems to fall into place.. especially the stomach pain, enlarged liver, and the fact it's on my left side. That is where my problems started years ago and I ended up going to the hospital and always leaving with no answers. I know I've had blood work done, but I honestly cannot remember the details or what my WC was.
As for posting here, I would just like to know if anyone here has been throguh this (I'm sure everyone has had their own journey with illness), and if so please let me know any advise as to what to do next or if this seems to match up with cancer.

Carrie,
The bruising and fever sound like leukemia. However, there are a bunch of other things that would cause the same symptoms that aren't leukemia. Usually, a simple blood test would be enough to know. You need to see a doctor ASAP to see what you have. |
