My friend Kevin has just been diagnosed with cancer in his kidney. Unfortunately, over the last couple of years, I've become kind of an expert on some types of cancer. Pancreatic (I lost my dad three years ago in a hurry) and lung (lost another friend last week - also in a hurry). I am so sick of this damn disease!
I want to be able to help kev as much as possibe and I've found information is the best way to do that. However I don't see much on kidney cancer.
Here is what I know;
Kevin had his gall bladder removed six weeks ago. Apparently he had major issues with digesting food so it was removed.
He went back to the hospital yesterday due to the same type of pain he had earlier with his gall bladder. After a scan, they discovered a 6 cent. mass on his kidney which they will be removing shortly.
What can he expect now?? How does kidney cancer progress? Does anybody know? Is it possible that it was related to the gall bladder stuff and it was missed?
I am scared stupid of losing more people I care about but the track record for cancer winning is beating me up.
If anybody knows anything, could you please respond? I certainly could use the info and I want to be ready when I go to see him.
Thanks in advance for your time

kelly

Hi Kelly. I am so sorry to hear that your friend has cancer. I can understand your anger. Both of my parents died due to cancer and I am a cancer survivor myself.

I am not sure about Kevin's Kidney Cancer... that is, what Kevin can expect. Like almost all types of cancer, it really depends on its stage (how large it is, how far has it spread...) and its grade (how aggressive it is, how different the cancer cells are from normal Kidney cells).

I assume that since it is quite large, that there is a danger the it has already metastasized. Fortunately, we can live without one kidney. The danger is that the cancer might go to his other kidney. I highly suspect that Kevin will be receiving some form of chemotherapy after he has time to recover from the surgery.

Kevin is fortunate to have you as his friend. Learn all that you can about the Kidneys and Kidney Cancers.

You and Kevin are in my thoughts and prayers.
