| My mother in law found a lump under her arm (lymph nodes)....had surgery to remove some and they tested positive...she then had I believe a PET scan or something where they injected glucose because apparently cancer cells attract to sugar??? She hasn't heard anything definate, but the M.D has called her and told her he thinks it's in the colon...she had colonoscopy 4 yrs ago but they had to stop because of the abnormal shape of the colon and weren't able to continue...now she may have to have another surgery to have the rest of the lymph nodes removed and also may have to have another colonoscopy...my question is this....Is this a wise choice beings they weren't able to complete the last colonoscopy? and 2) why didn't they take all the lymph glands in the first place, instead of now having to go thru another surgery for that....She lives in another state and we've decided that if she needs cancer tx, she will move to minnesota to stay with us while having the treatments...Any suggestions on the best place to go? |

It's awfully kind of You to step up and take care of Your Mother In Law.I have an email buddy in Minnesota, her husband died with Lung Cancer-she must live in a remote area though because they it took them an hour or two to get to the Doctor for appointments and treatments.Hopefully You are a little closer-I sure hate she is having to go through all of this .I also hope she's a better patient than I was )- my mastectomy was the first operation I've ever had,I don't get along too well with pain,I'm a big ole cry baby The pain after surgery is in a class by itself-nothing to relish and by the way it never hurts to get a second opinion, even a 3rd if necessary.
You have alot on Your plate, but remember to take care of Yourself too!Caregivers play an especially important role -it takes time and patience to care for others going through something like this.Just make and take some time for Yourself,it helps to rejuvenate Your spirit.God Bless You!

Hi, nice of you to respond.....ironic also, as we have since found out that if it is any type of cancer outside of her lymph's, it would be breast cx....
They believe it's been caught in the very early stages. She is having an MRI next week. In any case she will have to tx of some sort..
If it's in the breast she will have mastectomy on (L) side, and tx with chemo or radiation, or a combo....
If it's not outside the lymph's then she still will have to have surgery to have the rest of the glands removed from the (L) side. No decision yet on what tx would be in that case.
I'm all too familiar with this scenario; my mom had breast cx when I was 15-16 yrs old. She is a survivor, but has had many health issues since, not from the cx, but from the effects of the silicone breast implant that she had implanted, and ruptured, we believe the very day after it was put in. She had it removed about 5 yrs ago and there was nothing left in it. Finding a surgeon to take it out was almost impossible also as they live in a very rural area. All the M.D's knew one aother, and didn't want to cross/offend one another. I also work in the Medical Field, and I just about get sick when I think about what she's going to go thru in terms of treatment. Although right now the Dr. is telling her he thinks it will be ok with minimal rounds of chemo.
On top of everything, this is all happening right when we have an opportunity to relocate to Portland, OR. We have talked about moving there quite a bit since being there on vacation a couple of yrs ago. My partner has filled them in on the situation, and they seem open to the suggestion of working from here (minnesota) until his mom's finished with this little war, and his house sells. He will fly out there next week to interview/check out housing...it's another lesson in knowing how little we control in life...lessons like that I tend to fight!!
Well that's all I know for not, I'm assuming that you are in good health today, and that it continues for years to come.
I was glad to see this msg. I had tried to get on line the other night, but I had the wrong addy for sight Now I'm all set!...Take care. Mk |
