Case History:

My wife is a 64 year old Pancreatic survivor. She underwent a Whipple procedure in March or 2001 with subsequent Chemo and Radiation treatments.

In February of 2008 she underwent an operation to remove a blockage of the digestive tract caused by scar tissue growth.

In late February of this year she went in for a routine incisional hernia repair. It was to be done laparoscopically, but the bowel was torn and they ended up opening her up. She was sent home and returned a week later with Peritonitis. After almost two months and four operations she was released with a PIC line for TPN and a Wound VAC.

She was home a little over two weeks and ended up with an infection possibly from the PIC line. That was three weeks ago, the day before yesterday we were told that she again had an intestinal blockage so we are back where we were a year and a half ago.

They say they want to insert a Stent to open her passageway because she is not a candidate for another operation at this time. Unfortunately she does not heal as quickly as a normal individual because of all the Chemo and Radiation. She was given two units of blood on the 9th to H&H values. Yesterday when I arrived she was terribly jaundiced and complaining of increased pain. I was told that this unfortunately can be a side effect of the transfusion. I'm beside myself with worry of course.

I've obtained a copy of her latest blood labs and post these hopping someone can shed some light on what's going on.

(These are Values flagged Critical) – 6/10 and 6/11

Total Bilirubin 15.9 16.1
Direct Bilirubin 9.5
ALK Phos 1382 1178 (This has been high the past 4 days)

The original Whipple was done at a Large Medical Center, while the other procedures were performed at a local hospital with a good reputation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

John
