CT scans are generally considered safe and the risks are minor. No radiation remains in the body afterwards. The only question should be was this CT really necessary for someone of your daughters age?

Like dental x-rays, it is generally believed that as long as these procedures aren't done too often the benefits normally outweigh the risks. So was the doctor right, did they find anything or was it a waste of time? If this doctor appears willing to take unnecessary risks with your daughter, then it may be time to change doctors.

If you are wondering whether she has radiation poisioning than this is not correct. Whatever symptoms she has now are more likely to be the result of the reason the doctor recommended the scan. She has already had the scan and the possibility of something going wrong is very small. The best you can do is ensure that she doesn't have any more unnecessary scans. Of course, if she really needs further tests get a second opinion is my suggestion.

Ramya, first, I am very sorry about your child's health problems that lead the the CT scan. I agree with kenobewan... the amount of radiation she received really should not impact her but the question is why did the doctor ask for it in the first place?

I will add one further comment: You should never allow any test on you or your child without fully understanding in need of the test, the potential dangers that be test has, and what are the benefits of the test.

Keep us informed.

Hi Ramya,
A typical CT scan gives a radiation dosage approximately equivalent to one year of normal background radiation. A single CT scan should not have harmful results, even on a young child.

You should feel free to ask the doctor to explain each test they order. They can also describe the risks involved. Be part of the health care team of your child by asking these questions.

I hope everything works out well!!!!
