Hi my uncle is very close to death with stage 4 pan. cancer. We got him home from hospice last friday, since he did not want to die there. 2 days ago all the color came back into his skin and his urine cleared up. He was also standing up and walking with some assistance. This is kind of crazy since he has been in bed and has not had any food or water in almost 3 weeks.

I am not dillusional in thinking he is miraculosly getting better, but i just want to know if there is a way to get some nutrition into his body since he cant really swallow anything. We hate to see him just sit there just withering away, and would like to make him feel comfortable in another way than just morphin.

Does anyone have experience with caring for someone at home in a situation like this?

thanks i appreciate any help here.

Sorry to hear about the bad news, i also have a relative with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and it is very upsetting for the whole family.

Like my relative, eating is very difficult but is essential to get the nutrients you need.

The best thing i can recommend is nutrional drinks like ensure which are a small milkshake containing all the vitimains and 300 calories per serving.

They are very easy to digest and the company also make the nutrional drips for hospitals so they know what they are doing.

If swallowing is hard then make sure you tell your doctor as they gave my relative pain killers to bypass this problem.

My relative dosent eat much but if she manages a few sips every hour then you will find they soon get through a couple of bottles a day.

Hope this helps,

bs3ac.

Sorry to hear about your uncle.

First, see if the Hospice service will help with any at home advice, support or "comfort" treatments which range from drugs to medical supplies.

One suggestion from a Hospice nurse was to use a blender to take any food and make it into a liquid.......

The loss of appetite or unwillingness to even try to eat is not uncommon even though it seems so strange to caregivers.
