Hi, my name is Teresa and I recently had a hysterectomy. The doctor removed my uterus and cervix, but we decided to leave the ovaries as they looked ok. Also, my biopsy showed hyperplasia, but was negative for cancer. When I went in for my two week check up the doctor told me that my pathology report showed endemetreal cancer. Now I will be having another surgury on December 10th to remove the ovaries and do a biopsy in my pelvic area. I wish I would have opted to have teh ovaries removed with the first surgury but we were shocked to find the results out. My mother in law is living with us and she is very ill. She recently had a biopsy and it revealed advanced lung cancer, it is too large to operate and she is too weak to undergo cemo. She is in a lot of pain in her legs also and they are doing a bone scan tomorrow, the doctor said if it has spread then she is a candidate for radiation as that is suppose to help with the pain and help keep her bones from fracturing. I never knew that. It has been a stressful couple of months. I'm sure I will be fine, but it is going to be hard taking care of both of us. I"m glad I found this board.

Hello teresals:

Sad I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis and also about your's mother-in-law being diagnosed with cancer too. This has to be a very stressful time for you, because it is such a shock when a person learns they have cancer--but you also have one of its suffering victims in your home. I cannot tell you how I despise this disease.

I hate you have to have another surgery to remove your ovaries, apparently the cancer was not seen during your hysterectomy. Hopefully that will translate to a very early stage cancer, and statistically, your prognosis would therefore be quite good. Find out what your stage is, to see if it lines up with standard treatments for endometrial cancer. Treatment varies by stage.

Concerning your mother-in-law's radiation, I have not heard it helps with bones. After I had radiation to my abdomen, I developed osteopenia. You might peruse through the forum on lung cancer (or other forums) to see what other people may have experienced regarding metastasized cancer to bones.

Teresals, you and your mother will be in my thoughts and prayers, and know you are among a group of caring people. Keep us posted. Come visit with questions and concerns whenever you need to.

Rhonda

Hi Teresa.

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis and that you have to have another operation. You don't say how old you are, maybe that played a part in why they left your ovaries in.

As Rhonda says find out what stage you are, I was lucky ending up as a stage 1b and it sounds like you are also at an early stage as they didn't see anything during the first operation. However until you get all the biopsys back from the lymph nodes you can't be sure.

I hope that everything works out well for you, post away if you have any questions or worries and take care of yourself.

Thank you both for your replies. I am 45. The operative report shows that it is stage 2 (of3). Not quite sure what it all means but I'm going to take a list of questions with me when I meet the surgeon at the University of WA hospital on Tuesday. I'm hoping after teh surgury I won't have to wait too long for the results. I want to leave the hospital knowing they did not find anymore cancer in the ovaries or in the lympthnoids...that is my prayer.

Hi Teresa

Endometrial cancer is staged from stage 1 to stage 4

Stage I The tumor is confined to the uterine fundus (the body of the uterus).
Stage IA The tumor is limited to the endometrium (the lining of the uterus).
Stage IB The tumor invades less than one-half of the myometrial thickness (the myometrium is the muscular tissue that is found just beneath the endometrium).
Stage IC The tumor invades more than one-half of the myometrial thickness.
Stage II The tumor extends to the cervix (the lower part of the uterus).
Stage IIA Cervical extension is limited to the endocervical glands (glands in the inner lining of the uterus, where the cervix meets the uterus).
Stage IIB Tumor invades the cervical stroma (the supporting connective tissue of the cervix).
Stage III There is regional tumor spread.
Stage IIIA The tumor invades the uterine serosa (the layer of tissue that surrounds the outside of the uterus), or adnexa (tissues on either side of the uterus), or cells in the peritoneum (the member surrounding the abdominal cavity) show signs of cancer.
Stage IIIB Vaginal metastases are present.
Stage IIIC The tumor has spread to lymph nodes near the uterus.
Stage IV There is bulky pelvic disease or distant spread.
Stage IVA Tumor has spread to the bladder or rectum.
Stage IVB Distant metastases are present.

Hope that helps!

I'm also in my early 40's even though I still think of myself as 25 Laughing Laughing I was terrified of going through a surgical menopause but have so far had NO symptoms at all.

Take care

Well tomorrow is the day I go in for my pre-op. I have to go to Seattle and it is 110 miles from home. I have an appointment with the surgeon at 9am, one with the nurse at 9:30 then the last one at 2:30. I wish they were not so far apart. At least I will know more what to expect during the surgury on Thursday.

Hi Teresals,

Very Happy We are all pulling for you to come through this. That will surely be a long day you just described, but take the bull by its horns and throw this beast down. Have a pen and paper ready to take down notes and medical terms, and I hope you have someone to accompany you today and on Thursday. It really helps to have two set of ears taking in information at a time like this, and as well as the comfort of a friend or love one. Let us know how your biopsy turns out and keep us posted. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Stay positive--and set in your heart in you will beat this thing. Wink

I hope everything goes well for you today, (and tomorrow of course).

They usually take and do a quick biopsy during the surgery, this determines whether they take the lympnodes out or not. It usually takes a few days after surgery to get the final results, keep pestering them every day sometimes it helps. Laughing

I'll be thinking of you, please post when you are feeling up to it and let us know the outcome.

Ended up being able to do my surgury lapascopic. They removed the ovaries, tube and six lympthnoids. The doc said things appeared good, but have to wait for pathology results next week. I did have a complicatin with my leg. They cut a nerve of something and I have no feeling in my upper right leg. The doctor said sometimes it can heal and sometimes it remains permanent, but that it won't affect my ability to walk or anything. Just feels really strange. Going back to bed now, thank you all for your prayers and I will update soon.

Teresa that's great news, your recovery will be much faster. Get lots of rest and keep us updated about how you are feeling. This board helped me so much, I knew I wasn't the only one going through it.

I hope your right leg gets better, be careful that you don't injure yourself if you have no feeling.

Hoping your Pathology results are clean.

Take care

I just got a call from my oncologist and he told me there was no more cancer. It was all contained in the uterus. The ovaries, tubes and lympthnoids were all clear. PRAISE GOD! I will follow up every three months, but he said no need to radiation or cemo. Thank you all for your prayers and support. I have this huge weight lifted and can now concentrate on getting well.

That is so good to hear Teresa, I'm so happy for you. It sounds like you have the same staging as me. (everything contained in the uterus). I had to go through radiation more as a cautionary measure.

Take care

My heart aches for you and mother in law. I want to encourage you not to personalize the horrible struggles that your mother is going through. Just because it happened to her, does not mean you will have the same thing happen to you.

Surround yourself with as much laugher, upbeat thinking, prayer, love and support you can.

God loves you and so do I,
Brenda
