I have been told that Tamoxifen works less well on reducing the chances of reoccurence of breast cancer after surgery if you are Her2Neu positive (as well as estrogen/progesterone positive). I am looking for some statistics or any information.

Hi Maria,

I can't answer your question but here is an excellent site to get information regarding her2neu: www.her2support.org These ladies are all her2neu positive and really have lots of knowledge.

Good luck,

Margie

Maria, I can not answer in regards to tomoxifen being less effective with Her2neu... Not being a doctor I can only give you general info about what I know... that is the tomoxifen attacks the er/pr part of the cancer by cutting down as much estrogen as it can through the ovaries, which based on your status the er/pr has been feeding the cancer. The Her2neu is a different part of the whole scenario... the her2neu is a protein (I believe) that also contributes. The tomoxifen, or arimidex (if you are postmenopausal) will take care of the er/pr part. If they want to attack the her2neu then they will use herceptin which attacks that part. I dont think that the tomoxifen is any less useful in this, it is just that there are two issues to deal with. They can also shut off the estrogen with other stuff like lupron. The difference between the tomoxifen and the arimidex, as I understand it is that they work on different systems.. the tomoxifen working in the ovaries and the arimidex working in the adrenals...thus tomoxifen for premenopausal women and the arimidex in post menopausal women. I know that all of this is very overwhelming but hold on to your hope and talk to your doc about what he feels will work best . I am sure that Dr. Leo will get back to you on this as soon as he can! Hang in there!
HUGS!
Barbara
