Hello,

my mom (60 yrs old) was diagnosed June 13 with stage 3b non-small cell lung cancer. The tumor is right in the middle, resting on the bronchi and the vena cava, which caused her symptoms of breathlessness.

We are Canadian and our public health-care system, while cheap, makes it almost impossible to seek a second opinion (waiting list > 1 year to see a pulmonologist or oncologist in an external clinic). I am looking for feedback on the treatment plan.

She started chemo last Monday (June 20), with cisplatin & vinblastin; plan is once a week for 5 weeks, with only vinblastin for weeks 2-4 and both cisplatin & vinblastin week 5. She is incredibly weak and nauseous but the oncologist did not prescribe anything for nausea other than OTC Gravol.

The pulmonologist wanted to start radiation but the radio-oncologist wants to wait after the chemo. We are also on our fourth pulmonologist as they are "balancing" their case loads and treating my mother like a hot potato. The pulmonologist & oncologist also disagree on whether she should be hospitalized (which she has been since June 8 with two weekends at home)

Any feedback appreciated, thanks,

Ago

I was staged 3A got a big bottle of cisplatin every week but never really got very sick or too tired. I never lost any hair and gained weight, I went from 186 to 202 lbs. (I ate lots and lots of steak) Radiation made my throat sore. I got tired but was never too tired to play golf although I did have to take a cart in the last two weeks and lost my appetite for steak so I switched to shrimp and lobster.

I wish someone could explain how come people react so differently to cisplatin.
