I'm a 57 y/o male and was diagnosed in 11/04 with lung cancer. Pretreatment bone and brain scans indicated that the cancer had been caught early, with no indications of spreading. I've undergone extensive chemo and radiation treatment, and follow up PET scan indicated no trace of the originally diagnosed cancer in the lung. However, the PET scan picked up an abnormal spot in my hip (which was not there in 12/04), and a confirmation bone scan also indicated the abnormality. Due to difficulty in performing a biopsy in the hip area, both oncoligists recommended that I wait for 90 days and retest. My doctors stated that even though they suspected the area in question was cancer, they would not treat unless absolutely sure.

I was very uncomfortable in waiting 90 days, but I agreed to the wait, however about 2 weeks later I began to experience pain in the hip. At first it was little more than a discomfort, but it became absolutely unbearable within the following 2 weeks. Even though my doctors still did not have "absolute" proof that the area in question in my hip was cancer, they recommended that I agree to have the area radiated, and stated that if it was cancer that the radiation should stop the pain. I received 23 radiation treatments to the hip, and finally 2 days after the radiation was complete, I began to see a reduction in pain level. Two days later the pain was completely gone, but this lasted for only 3 days. The pain began to come back after 3 days, and seems to continue building in intensity. Can someone provide some explanation as to why this is happening? Can bone cancer be cured on at least put into remission? Originally my doctors also wanted me to agree to a preventative radiation of the brain, and now I'm told that they no longer recommend this procedure. Any ideas as to why the doctors changed their position on this?

I think that I've remained very positive about beating this disease over the past 6 months, but remaining positive is becoming more difficult each day. I know that I've put forth a number of questions, but would appreciate any information of feedback.

Thanks,
